About Ari
I have been interested in the inner workings of language for decades and have been lucky enough to make that my professional life: I studied at the University of Minnesota and got my Ph.D. in Germanic Philology (that is, linguistics).
I have taught German at the university- and high school-levels since my hair was black, a color I now miss. And I have, in the last few years, been working on more comprehensible approaches to English grammar.
I'm also fascinated by etymology – the history of words (though not en-tomology, the study of insects).
[I can also help with some elementary Latin questions. As far as tutoring for a linguistic course goes (as opposed to language courses like German), let me know first what you might need help with – there are so many directions that linguistics can take one in.]
I can't solve every problem, of course, but I can give it a go!

My methods depend on the student.
I try first to talk to the student about where he or she might be having issues – vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, writing short essays – and go from there. Sometimes, students are not sure where their strengths or weaknesses are – that's OK, we can usually find them together.
I have amassed a rather sizable collection of teaching materials over the years, and I can almost always find something that applies, especially when it comes to specific areas of grammar or vocabulary.
The student can also explore specific topics on his or her own, and we can talk about what was found and which aspects of it we want to discuss.
I like to have students write paragraphs or short essays – usually on topics of their choosing – that we can look through and analyze. Sometimes I have students work on these things between lessons, sometimes I challenge them to write "on the spot."
And of course, conversation always plays a role in sessions, even if it's just "shooting the breeze."
In any case, I always like to maintain a friendly and relaxed atmosphere with students. The world is stressful enough.
