About Tony
Tony De Maeyer: Actor / Choreographer / Educator / Biomechanics Specialist by W. Meyerhold The Belgian film and theater actor - was born in Brussels and studied at the Koninklijk Vlaams Conservatory in Antwerp (B) with Ivo Van Hove and continued his education for years through workshops with, among others, Luk Perceval, Minako Seki, Enrique Vargas, Thierry Salmon and especially in 1996 he meets Gennadi N. Bogdanov in Berlin (lecturer for biomechanics at the former GITIS in Moscow). This is the beginning of an extremely intensive collaboration that enables him to make Meyerhold's biomechanics his own in practice. De Maeyer is probably one of the few actors in the world who has adopted the perfect assimilation of biomechanics principles into his acting, both on stage and in film. For many years De Maeyer has been teaching and leading workshops for biomechanics at theater schools in Germany and abroad, such as the UdK in Berlin, the AdK in Ludwigsburg, the 'Ernst Busch' in Berlin, the HMDK in Stuttgart or the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz . As a biomechanics expert, he has been engaged for many years at state theaters (Theater Aachen, Theater Bonn, Theater Münster, Volksbühne ...) as well as with theater ensembles to provide artistic support for theater productions by training the actors to teach them the principles of Familiarize yourself with biomechanics and stage bodies in motion. He worked with Christian von Treskow, Dimiter Gottschef, Luise Voigt, Darijan Mihajlovic, and many others. De Maeyer has set himself the task of freeing Meyerhold's biomechanics from its overly dogmatic historical context and developing it further as a modern acting method. In addition to the work of K. Stanislavski, he considers biomechanics to be extremely relevant and indispensable for the actor's craft. Since 2006 he has been engaged as a biomechanics trainer at the Mime Centrum Berlin, today the International Theater Institute Germany. In 2017 he founded 'Biomechanics Berlin', a weekly class for actors * who want to expand their possibilities of expression with the principles of theatrical biomechanics by W. Meyerhold. As an actor, De Maeyer received the 1993 Best Actor award at the Brussels International Film Festival.

About biomechanics and training. The theatrical-biomechanical training essentially comprises a compendium of exercises to build up and improve the physical constitution of the actors as well as to study the principles of movement analysis and construction. The focus is on the game of balance, rhythm, space and perception of one's own body, as well as on the musicality and poetic expressiveness of the body in motion. Awareness of form, spatial coordination, body control, rhythm and musicality, but above all eccentricity and the grotesque, i.e. the search for extreme physical states, are important characteristics of the biomechanical culture of play. Actors trained in biomechanics usually have an extremely wide range of possibilities of expression and are able to change the registers within a very short time, from expressive and artificial to reduced naturalism to slapstick and clown play. The amazing versatility of biomechanics and its ability to integrate new influences into its own system make it an effective instrument for eclectic, postmodern playing styles that aesthetically reflect the prelude character of the theater in today's situation. “The basic rule of biomechanics is very simple: the entire body is involved in every moment.” W.Meyerhold
