About Melissa

Hello! I'm Melissa, a friendly, patient and supportive TEFL/TESOL-qualified English tutor from England.

I have a History degree from University College London (UCL) and experience teaching English to learners from a range of backgrounds and levels.

I currently volunteer teaching English to asylum seekers and refugees, helping learners develop their communication skills and confidence. I also teach one-to-one online lessons to both adults and children, adapting my teaching to each student's level, personality and goals.

My passion for language learning also comes from personal experience. I taught myself Spanish to an intermediate level and lived in Spain while working as an au pair, where I taught English to both a child and her parents. I know how challenging it can feel to learn a new language — especially when you understand English but don't feel confident enough to speak it.

That's why my goal is not simply to teach you more English, but to help you feel comfortable and confident actually using it.

About the lesson

My lessons are conversation-based, personalised and focused on helping you build real English fluency.

Whether you want to improve your everyday English, speak more confidently, prepare for life in an English-speaking country, expand your vocabulary, or simply become more comfortable having conversations, I'll tailor our lessons to you.

In our lessons, we can use:

️ Conversation and discussion to develop fluency
Useful vocabulary and expressions for real-life situations
️ Grammar practice to improve accuracy
Pronunciation work to help you sound clearer and more natural
Practical speaking activities based on your goals and interests

I won't simply give you a textbook and ask you to complete exercises. I'll create lessons around you — your level, interests, goals and areas for improvement.

As you speak, I'll make notes and provide clear, constructive feedback on your grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and sentence structure. This means you can speak naturally without being constantly interrupted, while still getting the corrections you need to improve.

After each lesson, I can also provide a short summary of the vocabulary, expressions and corrections we've covered, so you know exactly what you've learned.

If you'd like extra practice between lessons, I can provide optional personalised homework based on what we worked on in class. I'll also be happy to give you feedback on your homework, helping you continue making progress outside our lessons.

Most importantly, I want my lessons to be a relaxed, supportive space where you feel comfortable making mistakes. Making mistakes is part of learning a language!

Her empathy and kindness means that she can explain things to people in a way that works best for them. She can read people very well so will be easily able to see what techniques are effective on people and which aren’t as preferable. This will enable her to adjust her teaching style depending on the person, rather than a one faced approach. She is very enthusiastic and so can explain things in a way which seems exciting and interesting, making the learning experience enjoyable, personalised and effective.
