About Kate
I have bachelor's degrees in English and History from Cornell College. I also have a master’s degree in Literacy to qualify me as a reading specialist.
I have been tutoring and teaching for 12 years. For the past seven years, I have enjoyed teaching one-on-one as my full-time position as a supervising teacher and Highly Qualified Teacher for English in an independent study high school's learning center. There, I work with students one-on-one in both college prep and remedial English coursework.

I'm Kate. I love working with students individually to help them develop confidence as they learn to read, think, and write clearly.
In a typical lesson, I first spend a minute or two building rapport and learning about what academic concerns the student may be dealing with that week.
I then start the lesson with a short review game about the previous lesson to help cement the learning. Then, we move on to the current concept. I incorporate visuals, short videos, and interactive brainstorming activities to support many avenues for comprehension. For both reading and writing, I structure lessons in an "I do, we do, you do" format. Starting with teacher-provided examples, we move forward to using teacher-provided structures for students to practice skills. Finally, students demonstrate mastery on their own (with me there to cheer them on).
I have 12 years of experience tutoring and teaching students from second through twelfth grades. For the past seven years, I have taught English and Literacy full-time at an independent study high school's learning center because I love working with students one-on-one.
