About Dalia

My name is Dalia Alfred Hanna. I would like to apply for an English teaching job. I worked in Egypt as a teacher of English from 1988 till 2019. I moved to the UK in January 2020 to join my husband who is a British citizen and a consultant eye surgeon doctor in the NHS Barnsley Hospital, South Yorkshire, UK. Both my B.A. and my M.A. are from The American University in Cairo (AUC). My B.A. is in Political Science and my M.A. is in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). I have another M.A. in Organizational Leadership awarded from the University of Colorado Springs. Furthermore, I have two teacher training certificates: a Certificate for Overseas Teachers of English Royal Society of Arts (RSA) awarded from The University of Cambridge and a Pre-service teacher training certificate for teachers of English as a Foreign Language from The American University in Cairo. I was hired as an adjunct faculty at the Rhetoric and Composition Department at The American University in Cairo from 2016 till December 2019. Moreover, I worked as a part time instructor at The School of Continuing Education (SCE) at The American University of Cairo from 1993 to December 2019. I taught courses in General and Conversational English, Business English, Test Preparation and Teacher Training. In addition to that, I was hired as a Program Manager at the Language Department at the SCE at the American University in Cairo from 2010 till 2014. Furthermore, I worked as a part time lecturer of Academic English and Research Writing at Nile University in Cairo from 2015 up to June 2019. Moreover, I worked as a teacher of English for pupils in their Kindergarten and preparatory stages and students in their preparatory and secondary stages.

Studying and working at Universities broadened my perspective and gave me a sense of openness and tolerance for new ideas, viewpoints and cultures. It also gave me varied skills and an ability to work with people from different cultural backgrounds. My extensive studies in teaching methodologies and my long years of experience in teaching EFL learners also allowed me to build a theoretical foundation for my teaching approach beside my personal drive and motivation. I find it very empowering to understand the pedagogical theories related to my field and to reflect those theories in my practical teaching.

Concerning second language acquisition, one of my teaching philosophies is social constructivism which focuses on collaborative and communicative learning that results in more dynamic and livelier classrooms where learning takes place faster and with a sense of fun. This does not mean that building vocabulary and learning grammatical concepts are ignored, but they are incorporated into the interactive tasks.

Another philosophy is the critical pedagogic approach that aims to assist student’s critical consciousness by inquiring, challenging and undermining posited ideologies and practices. In other words; to go beneath the surface meaning and understand the deeper meaning, the root causes and consequences of a text. This helps the students acquire skills to form objective opinions and arguments that are not one-sided. It also helps them not to consider criticism of thoughts and actions as personal attacks, but rather communicative and productive opportunities that build their characters and develop their linguistic and personal skills.

Furthermore, I believe in the ongoing process of self-reflection. In this process the teacher is continuously evaluating her lesson planning and her overall teaching performance. This helps the teacher adjust to the needs of the students through various ways; such as writing teaching journals, annotating lesson plans, or videotaping class sessions.

This collaboration between pedagogical theories and my philosophy of teaching helps me develop my students’ language skills that may prepare them for greater future challenges.
