About Serge
I don't have a master's degree from Harvard, I never did an internship at The Atlantic Magazine, and I was fired from my first job as a medical writer in Boston: I'm an extremely average science writer. Extremely average science writers can publish in Nature, Science, and PNAS if they learn how to design studies and tell stories.

High-achievers rarely succeed alone. Instead, most professionals rely on mentors. Top actors work with acting coaches, movement coaches, voice coaches, on-set coaches, to name a few. Top athletes have their own crew as well: skills coaches, physiotherapists, conditioning coaches, sports psychologists. Yet in academia, we practise "sink or swim", assuming that scientists somehow naturally know how to write, without specialised training. When I began my scientific career, I mostly sank in the "sink or swim" exercise. I would agonise for hours to produce a handful of coherent lines. I would often start in advance, only to find myself scrambling at the deadline. Writing was terrifying and a big pain. Yet one day, fortune smiled on me. Within a single year, I met and learned from exceptional mentors at institutions like Rockefeller University, Yale, and Cornell—and it was then that I truly learned how to 'swim' in academic writing. How to make writing enjoyable, predictably productive and fun. My dear mentors taught me how to transform even "weak" ideas and modest findings into high-impact publications. They showed me how to achieve exceptional clarity and speed. Now, I want to pass on these lessons to you so that one day you can pass them on your mentees.
