About ANN
Indicative of my creative approach to teaching and my strong interpersonal skills, I was incredibly proud to become a leading teacher in the city of Southampton. I believe wholeheartedly that ‘making mistakes’ is important and this is at the core of my personal teaching ethos; I encourage a ‘safe’ environment whereby it is ‘okay’ to get it wrong – that the key to continual progress is in the delving, the exploration, the fertile questions and the discussions and that, by getting it wrong, we can learn how to get it right. Further, I am particularly proud of the relationships I am able to build with all of the students who come into my contact believing that, once mutual respect is formed between a student and teacher, purposeful and productive learning follows as a natural course of action. I am also a firm believer in the power of self assessment to enable students to be proactive in their own progress, and have successfully embedded standardised, differentiated, proformas in my previous departments to enable this to occur as an effective method of AFL. Likewise, the implementation of the ‘DIT’ (directed improvement task) serves to challenge and motivate students in the form of a teacher-driven personalised progress target, and, in my view, is highly effective in demonstrating the power of marking and feedback as a tool for progress rather than as something that is rarely revisited.

I recognise the benefit in being continually reflective; tried and tested is good, but my creativity as a teacher continues and I am constantly exploring new ideas and strategies with the aim of engaging students with new teaching styles and strategies. I believe material should be both current and thought provoking to enable a true understanding of the skills required and my passion for the subject has been known to enthuse the most reluctant of students.
