About ALEX
I am a friendly, approachable and highly experienced tutor with over fourteen years of experience across academia, government and international organisations. I recently completed a post-doctorate in International Relations following a PhD in Politics and International Development, and I have taught undergraduate and postgraduate students at the University of Glasgow and the University of Edinburgh.
What matters most, though, is how I work with students.
I am naturally outgoing and very personable, and I aim to create a relaxed, supportive space where you feel comfortable asking questions and thinking things through without feeling intimidated. At the same time, I bring clear structure and focus to every session so that we make real, measurable progress.
Having completed undergraduate study, a Master’s and a fully funded PhD, including intensive field research, I understand first-hand the pressures that come with essays, dissertations and deadlines. I know what examiners are looking for and how to move from uncertainty to clarity, from a decent draft to a strong, confident and well-structured argument.
Alongside teaching, I have worked within government and international policy environments, which means I am skilled at explaining complex ideas clearly and connecting theory to real-world examples. Students often find this especially helpful when trying to strengthen critical analysis and deepen their arguments.
Students describe my style as calm, engaging and encouraging. My goal is not only to improve your current assignment but to help you think more sharply, structure your ideas more effectively and feel genuinely confident in your academic ability.
If you are feeling stuck, unsure where to begin or simply want to strengthen your work, I would be very happy to support you.
*I typically work via Zoom or Teams with screen sharing so we can work directly on your document together.
Quotes from recent tutoring of postgraduate students:
'The material is very insightful. Alex is providing amazing feedback which has helped me look at an issue in different perspectives.'
'I particularly love the effort that Alex Maxwell has been giving towards weekly summaries. I never had that luxury in the first semester. Great Job there Alex.'
'Thanks for all your hard work on the course!'

I know how overwhelming essays, dissertations and research projects can feel, especially when deadlines are close or expectations are unclear. My aim is to create a calm, supportive space where we can break things down together and turn uncertainty into a clear plan.
I work with undergraduate and MSc students in International Relations, International Development, Politics and related social sciences. Whether you are just starting to shape an idea or refining a final draft, I will meet you where you are and help you move forward with clarity and confidence.
In our sessions we can work on:
Clarifying and strengthening your research question
Structuring essays and dissertations
Developing a strong, critical literature review
Designing qualitative research and methodology sections
Improving argumentation and analytical depth
Reviewing draft chapters and identifying clear next steps
Preparing Master’s or PhD proposals
My approach is practical and collaborative. We will work directly on your material, identify what is working well and focus on areas that need strengthening. I aim to help you not only improve a specific piece of work but also build confidence in your academic voice and analytical skills.
If you are feeling stuck or unsure where to begin, feel free to get in touch with a short message about your project and deadline. I’m happy to suggest how we might work together and what would be most useful for you. Early booking is recommended during dissertation season.
