About Reuben

I am a 23-year-old graduate from the University of Exeter. I studied mechanical Engineering, achieving first-class honours. I am no genius, but I am a diligent worker, enabling me to achieve my academic goals. I understand the dedication required for academic success and the stress this can cause students - I experienced it myself!

I have tutoring experience with an organisation called Coachbright, which helps schools across the UK provide academic tutoring to financially disadvantaged secondary school students. I tutored with coachbright for over four months, providing support to 3 students weekly. I also have several younger siblings who frequently call upon their 'big brother' for help with exam preparation.

I enjoy mountain biking, surfing, and skateboarding in my free time. I would say that I am academically and interpersonally well-rounded, placing me in good stead to provide tutoring services. I believe STEM subjects are critical for humanity's future, and I am keen to support the upcoming generation of critical thinkers and problem solvers.

In my opinion, the most essential qualities of a tutor are:
1. High levels of competence within their chosen tutoring fields.
2. Teaching ability.
3. Interpersonal skills and relatability.

1 - I studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Exeter, achieving first-class honours. Studying Engineering has enabled me to confidently tutor STEM subjects between KS1 - A level.
2 - I have approximately 100 hours of tutoring experience with various age groups and abilities. I have the expertise to confidently teach complex topics in an approachable manner that students can understand. I am also attentive and ensure students understand my explanations. If an explanation does not resonate, I will try to re-explain the concept more straightforwardly.
3 - I have exemplary interpersonal skills (for an engineer). Jokes aside, I would like to think I'm a relatable character and my students tend to enjoy our sessions.

During tutoring, I have four objectives which make my sessions effective:
1. I Help my students set attainable goals.
2. I work alongside students towards their goals, ensuring they attain the required knowledge and skills for each topic, with a focus on the topics the student struggles with.
3. I tackle questions with my students, allowing them to apply and develop their knowledge.
4. I believe each student can incrementally improve to achieve their goals, giving them the confidence they need to aim high.

Stages KS4 and KS5 are academically demanding. As a result, students often experience interpersonal and academic challenges when working towards their GCSEs and A-levels. I understand how challenging education can be. I have experienced the self-imposed and external pressures caused by wanting to keep up with peers, make parents proud, and meet teachers' expectations. I know the feeling of falling behind in a class of seemingly more intelligent classmates. I have missed out on the grade I wanted and felt like I failed because of it. But I also know the feeling of turning it around by studying hard to achieve my goals. My tutor role is facilitating this transformation from an underachiever to a confident and proud student.

Sometimes we get stuck in a rut, whether it be self-esteem issues, perfectionism, or being too hard on ourselves. Worries and anxiety can be debilitating and hinder our ability to study. I subtly address my students' limiting beliefs and behaviours in my tutoring sessions. For example, many students initially believe they lack the intelligence to achieve their desired grades. At first, these students lack the confidence to tackle complex questions. These students require tentative encouragement alongside the development of their skills to give them the courage they need, empowering them to achieve their academic potential.

I also understand the pain and worry of parents who have children struggling in school. As a parent, you want your child to do well. In this situation, parents' most common mistake is applying too much pressure on their kids by setting high expectations. However, this can be detrimental, and expectations can cause resentment. I think the positive impact on grades achieved through parental pressure is not worth the pain it can cause young people. Students who get the most time with teaching staff do their best academically: Why do you think private schools achieve better grades? It's predominantly because these schools run lessons for longer hours, giving students more learning time to get familiar with the content. As a parent, don't stress if your child isn't achieving their potential. Instead, take effective action and get an academic tutor; the earlier, the better. Extra tuition is one of the best ways to get your child academically back on track by increasing effective learning time. You may consider running your child's tuition yourself, but after a long day, schoolwork is probably the last thing you want to do. My affordable lessons will take care of this, freeing up your evenings whilst ensuring you are doing the right thing for your child and their future.

Students have a lot on their plates. Finding the time and motivation to study can be challenging for students. During my sessions, I will deliver content interactively and engagingly. I ask my students interesting and challenging questions to develop their understanding and ensure they are prepared for the most demanding exam questions. I am an advocate for neural plasticity. When students are determined to improve, with the proper guidance, they will. I put myself on the side of the student to facilitate and accelerate progression. As an experienced tutor, trust me to help you or your child reach the peak of your/their academic potential.

I specialise in physics and mathematics at both GCSE and A-level. Still, I am also confident in biology and chemistry. However, my brother Zachary will run sessions for high-achieving students seeking biology and chemistry tuition. Zachary is studying biochemistry at the University of Exeter and achieved an A in biology and chemistry A-level.
Regarding lessons, I recommend at least 2x1.5h sessions per week for best results, but I am also willing to give less tuition at a minimum of 1x1hr session per week.
Using the interactive learning platform Seneca, I can also set homework for my students.
I run sessions both in-person and online. I am based in Alderholt but will be moving to Manchester in January; please keep this in mind if you are only interested in face-to-face sessions.
I look forward to meeting you,

Best regards,

Reuben.
