About John
With a B.A. in English from Stanford University, a J.D. from Vanderbilt Law School, and more than twenty-five years of experience as a professional proofreader, editor, and copywriter for a wide variety of content, academic and otherwise, and with additional experience as an English instructor at undergraduate and graduate levels, I can offer the highest level of proofreading, editing, and instruction in grammar and other aspects of written and spoken English.
(Please note: I teach English using US-based conventions regarding grammar, vocabulary, spelling, etc.)
After thirty years of living in Tokyo, Japan, where I performed the above-noted work, I’m currently living near Tucson, Arizona. Of course, I'm happy to work with you online, as well as in or within a reasonable distance of Tucson.
(In addition to my degrees, I received an A+ in a graduate level course in Pedagogical English Grammar as a non-degree student at Columbia University's Teachers College.)

I focus, especially, in both my editing and instruction, on helping you learn how to best convey your intended meaning – from the sentence- to the essay- and thesis-level – in the most effective manner possible in terms of grammar, vocabulary, compositional style, organization, and otherwise. I clearly show all deletions from and additions to your draft, with explanations where helpful, so that you can actually learn from my change suggestions and begin to incorporate them into your own writing even when you don’t request my services.
(I'm happy to offer a brief (10-15 minute) demonstration lesson free-of-charge to illustrate how I show my change suggestions.)
