About Jessica
I am a Spanish tutor with 6 years of experience and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish alongside training in language anxiety reduction techniques developed through continuing professional education. I have worked with over 200 students, many of whom describe years of studying Spanish without ever feeling confident enough to actually speak it in real situations. My focus on the psychological as well as technical dimensions of pronunciation development comes from recognizing across years of teaching that confidence is frequently the missing ingredient rather than knowledge or technical ability. I am passionate about helping students release the perfectionism that prevents so many capable Spanish learners from ever using the language they have worked hard to learn.

My Spanish teaching addresses pronunciation specifically through a confidence-building lens, recognizing that many students avoid speaking Spanish not because they lack vocabulary or grammar but because they fear sounding wrong and feel embarrassed about their accent. I begin by normalizing accent and imperfection explicitly — I explain that even highly proficient Spanish speakers retain traces of their native language patterns and that communicative success matters far more than accent perfection. My pronunciation instruction focuses on the highest-impact sounds first — the specific phonemes and patterns that most affect comprehensibility — rather than attempting comprehensive phonetic perfection, because targeted improvement in the sounds that matter most produces the fastest confidence gains. I use playful low-pressure pronunciation practice including tongue twisters, songs, and games because removing the seriousness from pronunciation practice reduces the anxiety that often accompanies it. Recording and listening back to one's own Spanish is introduced gradually and always with specific positive observations highlighted first, because students who only hear their flaws when reviewing recordings develop avoidance rather than improvement. I teach rhythm and intonation awareness through physical movement — clapping, walking to the beat of Spanish phrases — because embodied rhythm practice produces more natural-sounding speech than purely auditory instruction. My approach to correction during conversation practice is selective and gentle, addressing only the errors that genuinely impede communication rather than every deviation from native pronunciation. I explicitly discuss the research showing that accent has minimal impact on communicative success once basic intelligibility is achieved, because this evidence helps perfectionist students release unnecessary pressure. My teaching goal is a student who speaks Spanish freely and joyfully regardless of accent.
