About Cristina

Hello! My name is Cristina and I am a Spanish native with over 3 years of tutoring experience currently living in east London. Over the last couple of years I have worked with an assortment of students and gained experience with a range of fluency levels as well as age groups.

I have equal experience in academic and independently guided lessons based on each student's goals and needs. Both of my academically guided students have graduated within the top 10 percentile of their Spanish and Higher Level Art subjects. The more independent guided cases, two brothers with Dutch and Spanish parents and a London masters student, have made notable progress. The masters student, who was seeking Spanish support in preparation for a job hunt in the field of conflict resolution, is now applying for positions in NGOs across South America.

I spent my childhood attending international schools across 7 cities in Mexico, the United states and Spain, therefore I have experienced first hand the complexity of being immersed into new cultures and languages.This constant movement has taught me the myriad of ways in which people can relate and communicate across even the thickest of cultural and linguistic barriers. This dynamic growing up has given me a particular affinity to people and languages. I understand how difficult the language learning process can be so I have developed techniques of my own over the years to ease the transition. The most Important thing of all is to find a way to make learning as organic and accessible as possible!

About the lesson

I first started tutoring during my last year of art school in 2017 and was instantly surprised by how rewarding it was. Since then I have had the opportunity to work closely with 5 very different students each with their own set of unique challenges and needs.

I've found that contextualising language learning in current events is effective and usually more interesting for students. I like to regularly use content from various spanish news outlets as material to analyse, keeping students up to date on the country’s current cultural climate as well as exposing them to the language. I have found it is a very effective way of combining cultural and language immersion into a single lesson.

Furthermore, as someone living the dual life of artist and language tutor I like to enrich my lessons with elements from the art world resulting in the analysis and discussion of contemporary Spanish film and music. Artistic pieces of this nature are a great way of prompting the expression of colors, shapes, emotions and opinions in another language. The use of these contemporary elements in lessons also help maintain an engaging and refreshing learning environment.

As I have attended international schools my whole life I have developed quite a neutral Spanish accent which will be great for the initial stages of learning a language. This background has also exposed me to various other Spanish cultures and accents which we can also cover when necessary during lessons to provide a broad understanding of the language and its variations.
