About Sarah

I have been taking Spanish since the 6th grade, and have always looked forward to going to Spanish class as it has always been my favorite subject to learn and understand. I have always been at the top of my class at the end of each semester, with my ending averages being 96 and above for all 7 years and almost 2 semesters of Spanish. I also took dual enrollment Spanish my senior year of high school, obtaining 6 credits for when I entered my freshman year of college.
I have always been know for my ability to see what the exact roadblock is for a student when tutoring them and how to convey the information in a way that is suitable for THEM. Learning a language is not easy, and therefore most people need a catered way to fully understand and feel confident about speaking and writing in the language they’re learning.
I believe it is my job to establish this confidence, and my past experience working at a tutoring facility and helping peers in school have prepared me to provide students with what they need to succeed.

About the lesson

Hello everyone! My name is Sarah Mumford and I am so excited to meet you! I am a Language and World Business major at the University of Tennessee and have always had a passion for the Spanish language. I’ve been taking Spanish since the 6th grade, for a total of 7 years and almost 2 semesters in college. I have also been to Guatemala, and therefore have real experience being immersed in Spanish culture and communication with native Spanish speakers.
I have previous experience tutoring kids of all ages during high school, as well as working at a company that taught kids how to cook. I understand that each person has individual, critical, and valued needs that should always, 100% be respected during each tutoring session. I have many strategies and techniques to not only make the misunderstandings understood, but to rather instill a passion in who I am teaching so they don’t just make an A, but rather seek to know more and therefore grasp the information more easily.
I am looking to tutor children and teens in grades 6-12 who are taking a Spanish language class. I know what it’s like to help students further understand Spanish and have always been at the top of my class in all Spanish classes I have taken.
When tutoring, I approach whichever concept is being discussed in a very slow, “peel-apart” manner. Laying down what is understood, if anything, and then building up slowly but surely from there. I also apply real-life examples and memorization strategies to further embed the language concepts for long-term use, and have a strong belief that patience and repetition when tutoring are two of the most important things to involve constantly throughout lessons.
More specific concepts in the Spanish language I can tutor in, include but are not limited to: basic vocabulary, in-depth vocabulary, most common questions and ways to respond during verbal communication, analyzing texts, different tenses (ex. past, present, imperfect, preterite), numbers, letters, irregular verbs, listening comprehension, etc.
I am very excited to hopefully meet you soon and to help you advance your development with the Spanish language. Learning Spanish can truly be a wonderful thing with little frustration if explained in a manner that is personable to individuals needs.
