About Matt

My name is Matt, and I've always been interested in all forms of art.
I went to the Evergreen State College for my undergrad where I really delved into my love for photography, movies, animation, and music. Here I studied how to tell stories through the visual medium and write long twisted essays about philosophy and cultural artifacts.
After this, I wanted to refine my voice, so I went to study Creative Writing and Poetics at the University of Washington. This place also emphasized interdisciplinary studies, where I learned how to craft literature with improv and performance, lyrics, and plays. Here I was also able to do workshops abroad with children from other countries learning to speak English. And am currently helping the editorial staff at Essay Press.
Through my academic and creative endeavors, I found that I enjoy working on the craft of creativity with others, and want to help inspire creativity.

I've been involved in interdisciplinary environments for a while, and I think it inspires creativity, which is a huge focus in creative writing. There are ways to generate works of prose and poetry by engaging with the world, and in this case, recognizing many facets of knowledge and dictions there are.

I have more experience working with people at a college and graduate level and have experience doing workshops with middle and high schoolers.

A typical lesson plan involves beginning with a brief free write on a spontaneous subject, usually about five minutes.
Then a brief lecture, or as I call it, "talk at your faces for a minute," about a topic like style or time.
Then a creative workshop begins with looking at something (an image, video, or text), then talking about it, usually also trying to tie in the previous topic discussed. Another free-write based on the thoughts shared comes after.
The end of the workshop involves a prompt or open seminar.

My goal is to encourage anyone to write, and to write without worrying about whether or not the immediate moment of writing is "good" or "bad", and to just focus on the goal of getting something down. And to those who are curious about expressing themselves with writing, I want to support the goal of finding or refining a voice.
