About Sydney
I am a music teacher trained in classical and jazz styles with a music degree from the City University of New York. I am primarily a vocalist, having been singing more or less my whole life, and have the most experience performing pop/rock and jazz. I also play guitar and piano, write music, have some (emphasis on some) music production skills, and am knowledgeable about music theory.
Aside from music, I have a background in psychology, with both a bachelor's and master's degree in clinical psychology. I have extensive work experience within health and social care, including working with young people with mental health difficulties. I am very interested in exploring the use of music engagement as a wellbeing tool, and aim to promote this within my students as well. I hope to make music accessible and enjoyable to all, because we all have the ability to make and benefit from music!

I have experience teaching all ages and levels, and have mostly taught beginners (children and adults) or those returning to music later in life. I am well-versed in different styles and my priority is helping you sing how you want to sing, what you want to sing, and in a way that enhances your natural voice, while supporting you to explore new approaches and musical styles. I like to use a variety of methods depending on the comfortability and needs of the student and am always learning new techniques based on what my students are working on. I also like to incorporate ear training and some music theory into my lessons, as I believe building musicianship skills gives you a lot of flexibility as a singer and a stronger command of your voice.
Your first lesson will typically involve learning about the breath, doing some vocal warm-ups, and working with a short excerpt of a song you like (or would like) to sing. We will also discuss any past experience you have with singing and your goals for lessons. I am certified in Vocal Health First Aid, so within the first few lessons I will likely do some quick assessments to see how you are using your voice and if there are ways you may use it more safely.
I have worked with many students (children and adults alike) who have performance anxiety or are neurodivergent. I will always do my best to go at your (or your child's) pace and remain adaptable and responsive. Ultimately singing should be fun and build confidence, which is what I want for all my students!
