About Maddy

I have done two weeks work experience at a primary school at which I helped very young children with numeracy and literacy.
I have helped GCSE students hone their acting skills in Drama class, and have directed and stage-managed a few school plays.
I have helped my younger brother with his creative writing homework, and giving him some lessons in essay writing for GCSE. We frequently discuss the analysis of books he's currently reading. (He always gets A*'s!)
Lastly, I founded and ran a student-lead magazine for a year; I was the editor in chief and edited each piece.

About the lesson

I am a recent Philosophy and English Literature graduate (2:1) from the University of Reading who is looking to be a tutor in Sheffield.
I aim to provide help for students who need tutoring in essay and exam practice and in creative writing. I am willing to discuss texts (novels, poetry, plays) with students to help them learn how to analyse a text. I am also willing to discuss university tips, having recently been through university myself.
I go about it by, firstly, understanding their level. What do they need help with?
For English Literature, I do not want to teach them in facts, I want to train them in understanding the skill of writing essay plans and essays, the skill of writing an essay under time pressure and, mostly importantly, the skill of analysing a text.
I will tailor classes to individuals. I will use the techniques they use to learn - everyone learns differently. For example, I learn by writing things down, while my twin learns by watching a thing being done.
For Creative Writing, I'll come up with creative prompts to get their imaginations working, and will read over their work, helping them to understand what they have done badly and what they have done well.
I love to know that I have helped a person in something they are really struggling with. I am easy to get on with, and want to make learning fun and helpful.

Rates vary based on the amount of travel necessary - length of walk, expense of travel etc. I am willing to add no additional cost for a walk of 20 minutes. Above that, rates will differ depending on circumstances.
