About Sam
I am a Literacy Specialist now after having taught Elementary, Middle and High School Spanish for the last seven years. Before I taught I worked as an interpreter and bilingual paralegal for a pro-bono law firm representing Spanish-speaking clients. I have a passion for all languages and appreciate the intricacies of grammar and the structure of languages. English is my native language, so I learned this language initially in a classroom before living abroad in both Cuba and Mexico and traveling to many other Spanish-speaking countries. That means I know what students struggle with because I started my understanding of Spanish as a highschooler just like most of them!

My teaching method involves a lot of humor, pop culture references, and music. Languages are constantly evolving, so teaching Spanish means you have to stay current on what cultural trends are taking place. Translations and examples of songs, news articles, social media posts and other authentic content are excellent ways to show students WHY knowing Spanish is important. Often they surprise themselves when they understand content of songs in languages that were unknown to them before.
I'm also a huge grammar nerd. Spanish is a much more logically structured language than English. The patterns and organization of the language are very rigid and can be compared to Math formulas, much more so than English. Figuring out grammar puzzles and doing error analysis of authentic materials is fun and I like when my students can find entertainment in learning another language.
