About Ashton
Hello! My name is Ashton, and I'm a certified Secondary English Instructor from West Michigan. I graduated from Calvin College (now Calvin University) in 2017, and spent the next several years teaching in a K-12 charter school.
I now teach my two young daughters at home and teach once a week in a classical Christian homeschool group. I often spend free time reading literature from a variety of genres, and writing stories for my children (mostly fairytales!). I'm hoping to publish my writing, and am currently completing my first novel.
People need coaches in this subject for different reasons- some, because it's their passion and they want to develop their skills for personal reasons. Others pursue more practical outcomes, and may not enjoy the subject as much. No matter where you are on that continuum, I'll gladly meet you and help you reach your goals!

Being brought up in an environment that was largely classical in its approach, combined with teaching experience in the public school setting has made me a flexible, open-minded teacher with the ability to create assignments tailored for individuals- I understand that children aren't always served well by traditional methods, and each child is equipped with certain talents and gifts. I can recognize, celebrate, and develop these gifts, while providing the structure and rigor necessary to challenge your child.
Your child should come away from my sessions reinforced in the philosophy that developing the mind carries benefits far beyond a good grade on a test, or acceptance into the college of choice (though these are worthy goals!). The diligent study of language and development of personal discipline will equip them for every aspect of life.
Students may expect brief lectures and verbal instruction, punctuated by assisted exercises in English skills. These may include close-reading, developing and defending a thesis, creative writing, poetry analysis and writing, proof-reading, and group discussion skills. Some lessons include access to a reference or note sheet, which may include useful terms or concepts discussed during the session. Lessons may occasionally include other modes of expressions, such as visual art or music.
Online sessions are available for students in grades 7-12. I am open to discussing subject-related skills not mentioned above. Proof-reading and feedback services are also available for secondary level.
