About Dake
Hey there! I’m Shanghui Lin, but feel free to call me Dake. Growing up in China before moving to the U.S. at an early age, and later living in Greece, I’ve had the unique experience of navigating multiple cultures and languages. Learning English in Texas and adapting to new environments taught me firsthand the challenges of mastering a new language, from grappling with pronunciation to understanding local expressions and cultural nuances. (I've tackled everything from Texas twangs to Greek gestures, so trust me when I say I know what it's like to struggle with a new language...)
And for you, I’m here to make learning Chinese a smooth and enjoyable experience. I know it can sometimes feel overwhelming—one moment, you’re confidently saying "ni hao," and the next, you’re faced with memorizing hundreds of Chinese characters! My goal is to guide you through this journey comfortably. Together, we’ll work on those tricky pronunciations, engage in real-life conversations, and explore Chinese culture through its unique and symbolic language. Whether you’re mastering tones or uncovering cultural nuances, I’m here to help you build confidence and fluency, making Chinese a bridge to new connections and experiences.

Techniques and Teaching Methodology:
I provide a personalized and culturally enriched approach to learning Chinese, focusing on practical language skills—something I understand the importance of from my own experience learning English in Texas. I specialize in helping students improve their pronunciation, which can be challenging for non-native speakers, and emphasize conversational practice to build fluency and confidence. Lessons include interactive exercises, real-life scenarios, and guidance in pronunciation, writing, and speaking.
Typical Length of a Lesson:
Each lesson is 1 hour long, providing a focused and engaging session that balances language skills practice with cultural insights.
Qualifications/Experience as a Tutor:
I am a second-year Anthropology and Archaeology student at Durham University, with A-levels in History, Sociology, Art & Design, and Math (grades AABB). As a native Chinese speaker fluent in both English and Chinese, I also bring unique cultural insights from my experiences living in the U.S. (Texas, from the age of 12) and Greece. I have been tutoring two friends currently enrolled in a 40-credit Chinese language course at Durham Unversity, providing them with support in pronunciation correction, writing, and speaking.
Who the Lessons Are For:
The lessons are ideal for anyone interested in learning Chinese, from beginners to intermediate learners of all ages. Whether you’re looking to improve your pronunciation, enhance your writing and speaking skills, or gain a deeper understanding of Chinese culture, my lessons will be tailored to help you achieve your goals.

I had the privilege of learning Mandarin from Dake during sixth form, where he consistently impressed me with his expertise and teaching abilities. His mastery of Mandarin, from pronunciation to grammar and characters, made learning accessible for everyone, regardless of prior experience. Dake has a natural talent for breaking down complex concepts into clear, manageable lessons, always adapting his approach to meet individual needs.
One of Dake’s greatest strengths is his patience and encouragement; he creates a welcoming environment that allows students to practice without fear of mistakes.
