About John
I'm John, a Systems Engineer by day and a Test Prep tutor by night. I have over 20 years of experience with the SAT and ACT exams. My goal is to help you improve your score(s) by helping you understand how the test expects you to think and answer questions.
My focus depends on what my student needs. We start with a review of the concept, then we turn to strategies in approaching the different ways the test will present that concept to you, and then we focus on targeted practice and increasing the speed with which the questions can be answered.

All lessons are structured to meet the needs of the student. They are personalized to cover the specific areas of weakness that are indicated on the student's reports.
BEFORE WE START
Before the first lesson, I ask for a recent official SAT/ACT score and/or a practice test that you have completed. If you haven't completed one, I can assign one for you and create a detailed score report. This will be our starting point.
CONCEPTS
The first step is to ensure that you have a good grasp of the concepts that are tested on the exam. Whether that's the Pythagorean Theorem or Subject-Verb Agreement. If I notice any gaps in your understanding of the tested concepts, we will first address those.
STRATEGIES
Once you have a clear grasp of the concepts, we will focus on the various question types that test specific concepts and I will show you strategies for how to identify specific patterns in the questions, how to approach the answer choices with a keen eye, how to eliminate trap answers, and how to select the best answer. For Math, we will also focus on how to use the calculator to answer questions quickly with minimal errors.
PRACTICE AND FAMILIARITY
I will assign specific practice sets for you to complete to reinforce the concepts and strategies we cover. I will also assign full-length practice tests at frequent intervals to track your progress.

The goal is to ensure that you understand the concepts tested on the exam, learn specific strategies to approach different question types, and have practice and familiarity with the materials to be confident on test day.
