My Approach to SAT Prep Tutoring

As an educator with more than 20 years of teaching experience, including high school physics, social studies, and SAT preparation, I take a structured yet student-centered approach to SAT tutoring that balances skill mastery, strategy, confidence building, and data-driven customization.

Teaching Method & Techniques

My method blends concept mastery, targeted strategy, and reflective practice:

Diagnostic First: Every student begins with a full diagnostic test to identify strengths, weaknesses, and patterns in reasoning and timing.

Skill-Based Focus: I break the SAT into core domains —
• Reading comprehension and inference
• Grammar and expression
• Algebra, functions, statistics, and problem solving
— and ensure students understand not just the “what” but the “why and how” behind correct answers.

Strategy Reinforcement: We focus on test-taking skills—
• time management and pacing,
• elimination techniques,
• evidence-based reading strategies,
• algebraic shortcuts,
• interpreting data and graphs, and
• recognizing common distractors.

Metacognitive Reflection: Students learn to evaluate their own thinking patterns to prevent repeated mistakes.

My work is not “one-size-fits-all”; I tailor instruction to each learner’s profile using clear explanations, modeling of strategies, and iterative practice with feedback.

A Typical Lesson Plan

A standard 60-90-minute session includes:

Warm-up (5–10 min): Review prior work, quick skill drill.

Mini-Lesson (15–20 min): Focused on one major content area or strategy concept.

Guided Practice (25–30 min): Targeted problem sets with real SAT problems.

Independent Application (15–20 min): Student works problems while I circulate feedback.

Reflection and Wrap-Up (10–15 min): Review errors, set goals & practice strategies.

Each lesson is intentional, scaffolded, and rooted in measurable progress.

What Sets Me Apart

Educator First: I bring a district leadership and classroom teaching background, not just test prep scripts.

Analytics-Driven: I use data from diagnostics and practice to personalize pacing and skill priorities.

Broad Skill Integration: My tutoring connects writing, reading, and math skills to real academic and career success, not only test scores.

AI + Strategy: I leverage AI tools meaningfully — from generating practice problems to refining explanations — to maximize learning efficiency.

Student Empowerment: I teach students how to think like the test while retaining curiosity and confidence.

Who These Lessons Are For

I tutor students who are serious about maximizing their SAT performance — including:

High school students preparing for college admissions

Learners aiming to improve specific score bands (e.g., Reading/Writing or Math)

Students who need confidence and executive strategies, not just content review

Those in high-needs educational environments seeking equity and performance gains

My approach supports students of all levels — from those who need foundational skill building to those targeting top percentile scores.
