About Char

Hello hello!

My name is Char and I have trained at two prestigious drama schools, most recently graduating with a BA in Acting from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.

It took me four years to get into drama school and so I've been through it all: the self-tapes, the interviews, the devised pieces and songs, the workshops, the recalls, and yes... many rejections. BUT! I didn't give up! And I would love to guide you through your audition process with all the knowledge I've gained through my audition fails and successes, and extensive training across my BA at Royal Central and my foundation at East 15 Acting School.

My approach leads with joy and curiosity, and as a neurodivergent actor, I know that everyone learns and processes differently, which is why I'll guide you with clarity, kindness, and a lot of play.

30 MINUTE TASTER: I offer a free 30‑minute first session so we can meet, chat, and see how we get along before you book a full lesson!

GETTING TO KNOW YOU AND CHOOSING YOUR PIECES
First, I think it’s important to get to know a bit about you and your interests, so that we can get a good idea of what pieces might suit you. And, importantly, what the monologue requirements are for the schools you want to audition for. From 4 years of auditions, I have a bank of plenty of monologues, so don’t worry if you don’t have anything yet!
.........................................................................................
WARMING INTO THE SESSION
We would start each lesson with a quick check in, followed by a fun vocal and physical warm-up to loosen the body, settle into the space, and remind ourselves that this is meant to feel enjoyable.
.........................................................................................
WHAT DO THE WORDS MEAN?
Once the pieces are chosen, we’ll look into the background of the play and character and do some textwork to really understand the piece – which is particularly key when working with classical texts.
.........................................................................................
EXPERIMENTATION AND PLAY
I call it experimenting because the approach will be imaginative and fun and it’s all about diversifying your interpretation of the piece. It’s important to not get stuck in one way of performing, so that your speeches continue to feel fresh and fun (hence play!), and so that you can move through redirections with ease and confidence. The techniques I’ll work with will depend on the piece and what I think you’ll respond best to, but they may include: Michael Chekhov, Jacques Lecoq, Uta Hagen, Stanislavski, in addition to using vocal exercises to open up your range and free your voice.
P.S. I have lots of tips and tricks to help you learn your monologues so that they feel natural and embodied, and not just memorised.
.........................................................................................
BUILDING CONFIDENCE FOR THE “CHAT”
Audition panels love to have a conversation about you and your interests because very simply, they just want to get to know you a little. They often do call it a chat, but that can still feel daunting, and I know it did for me. To help you feel prepared, we can look at the kinds of questions drama school panels tend to ask and explore how you can answer them in a way that feels true to you.
