About Professor Elbie
I fervently seek wisdom and am stimulated by teaching and passing knowledge and experience on to eager students. I am excited when students take part in discussions and ask critical questions. Seeing students grow and develop a thirst for philosophy, fires my enthusiasm. My wish is for students to come alive and apply their newly found knowledge in their everyday lives.
I hold a Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Pretoria. I passed my Honours and Masters degrees with distinction, receiving the Cum Laude designation.
My university teaching experience spanned twenty seven years, of which 20 years were in the capacity of Professor in philosophy at UNISA. Undergraduate tuition included curriculum design; module development and module leadership. Courses taught: critical reasoning; biomedical ethics; African philosophy; introduction to philosophy; contemporary trends in philosophy: Marx, Nietzsche, Merleau-Ponty, Heidegger; Social ethics
Postgraduate tuition, consisted of module development and leadership: Coordinator of Honours, Masters and Doctoral studies; Chairperson of the Higher Degrees Committee in the Discipline of Philosophy; Module leader of Honour’s modules, including philosophy research, trends in contemporary philosophy and bio-medical ethics.
In addition to lectureships, scientific papers delivered to local and international conferences and universities on critical reasoning, African philosophy, and gender studies. Published several articles in accredited and peer-reviewed journals.
I was external examiner for the University of South Africa, the University of Johannesburg and the University of the Witwatersrand, all prestigious and highly ranked universities in South Africa.
I published the book 'Critical Reasoning and the Art of Argumentation' in 2010. I was awarded the 'Excellence in Tuition Award' at the University of South Africa (UNISA), in 2012, for the design and teaching of the module Critical Reasoning. In 2012 the module ‘critical reasoning’ was selected to be taught on OERu. It is also one of the five fundamental modules that are compulsory for the general BA Degree at Unisa.
I am now embarking on the exciting journey of private tutoring!

I am passionate and inspired to continuously gain more philosophical wisdom. This manifests in my teaching. I sincerely hope that all my students will also develop a thirst for philosophy and critical thinking!
I apply the principles of critical reasoning in all my lessons. Students are motivated to take part in sessions and ask critical questions, share their insights and informed opinions.
Lectures will be in English and Afrikaans. I invite adult learners and tertiary to post-graduate students, wanting to gain knowledge of philosophy. I hope to inspire students and enable them to grasp the value of philosophy and critical reasoning in the 21st century and beyond.
I construct comprehensive tutoring lesson plans for every lesson and they are made available to students before the following session. Students are fully informed about the lesson structure, goals and objectives for each lesson and learning outcomes. The plans set out the required input from students, who will be given opportunity to prepare for lessons in advance so as to enhance understanding.
