About DIANE
My name is Diane and I love to teach! I have been teaching for the past 30+ years. For 20 years, I taught grades 1-12 as a general education teacher and a special education teacher. After that, I taught teachers and administrators. My current certifications are for grades K-6 (all subjects), 7-12 (English), and K-12 (special education). I am also certified as a supervisor of special education and as a principal. I am trained in research-based phonics instruction and Common Core reading comprehension.
My first goal when I teach is to develop a trusting relationship with my students so that they will work with me through challenging learning. I do this by showing them that making mistakes is necessary when you are learning, by using lots of humor, and by valuing what they already know.
I am a strong believer in an open mindset. We are all capable of so much more than we know. With the right kinds of experiences, we can learn anything. I hope we can begin that kind of learning soon.

I teach reading skills to grades K-8 online. My goal as a tutor is to give my students hope by showing them that they can learn. I use humor and fast-paced, interactive learning to make my lessons interesting and uplifting.
MORE ABOUT WHAT I TEACH:
For students who struggle to sound out words they don't know, I use research-based methods to teach the rules of English phonics. With practice, students can greatly increase their speed and accuracy.
The same rules used for sounding out words can be applied to spelling. Because these skills support each other, we work on them together.
For students who need support understanding text, we will work on breaking apart complex text and learning how the parts work together. We develop vocabulary groups -- words that are related to each other, making them easier to remember.
I look forward to meeting my new students and starting our work/fun together.
