My teaching methodology is based upon teaching students from a real-world perspective. It is important that they learn the reading and writing skills which will bolster their ability to do well both in school and in today's workforce. Education = Opportunity.
It is very important for me to create a collaborative relationship with my students which allows them to feel safe while we work to together to improve their skills.
When faced with a student who is not motivated or engaged, I look for the "currency" or interests that I can connect to the learning content.
If there is no real-world connection for them, if they are not shown a valid objective of the work that we are going to accomplish together and how it will serve them in their lives, then oftentimes there is a disengagement.
My style is very relaxed, approachable and I strive for a sense of camaraderie with all of my students. Learning should be fun and engaging, and it is my job to deliver engaging class content. It is their job to learn the content and feel comfortable enough to tell me if I am moving too quickly, if they are confused, or if there are any other obstacles that are interfering with their learning process.
Teamwork is a universal skill that is modeled and used in the tutoring process. Together we can reach their goals.
I am a retired educator with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Master's in Education. I have 40+ years experience teaching in both classroom and 1:1 formats with a focus on reading, writing, elementary math, financial literacy and career readiness topics.
While teaching both in small groups and 1:1 with students in the K-12 setting, I served approximately 20-30 students per academic year. In my position as a Career and Technical Educator, I not only taught in a classroom three times per week for a total of 12 hours a week, but I also provided 1:1 additional tutoring to 2000+ students between the ages of 16-24 during a calendar year.
Currently I am self-employed as an editor with a focus on assisting clients with high school and college-level English essays and creating resumes and cover letters. In addition, I am also editing a health-oriented book being written by a chiropractor.
The vast majority of the students I have tutored have excelled under my tutelage. At one point in my career, I was the coordinator for a community college tutoring lab. I enjoy helping students "get it" and all the feelings of increased self-worth that accompany that teaching dynamic.
My rates are a flat $20.00 and I am willing to accept students in my home if you have a clear policy in place for home visits that protects both the student and the tutor. If there is not policy in place, I will tutor via webcam.
