About Anna

My own move abroad years ago forced Spanish fluency out of pure necessity, long before any formal study ever entered the picture. That immersive, occasionally frustrating experience taught me firsthand how differently real regional speech sounds compared to standard classroom Spanish. Later formal training filled in structural gaps, but daily life abroad remained my real, ongoing teacher throughout. That lived experience now shapes how practically I guide other expats and residents through the same adjustment.

Working with expats alongside long-term residents means constantly tailoring lessons to wherever a student has actually settled. I never treat regional Spanish as one fixed thing, since accents and expressions shift dramatically from place to place. What I find most rewarding is watching a nervous newcomer finally hold a relaxed conversation with a local shopkeeper without hesitation. That small, everyday victory often matters far more to students than any formal milestone could.

I stay closely connected to daily, regional Spanish through my own ongoing life abroad and constant local conversation. This keeps my teaching genuinely current and reflective of how the language actually sounds where students live. Lessons often adjust closely around a student's specific location and daily routine, not generic textbook scenarios. My hope remains constant, that students leave feeling genuinely at home in their adopted language.

Expats and long term residents rarely need textbook Spanish first, they need language that survives grocery stores, landlords and neighbourhood chatter almost immediately. Regional accent differences get addressed early here, since the Spanish heard on the street often sounds nothing like formal recordings promise. Everyday situational vocabulary comes next, covering housing, healthcare and casual small talk that fills most daily interactions. Pronunciation gets close attention throughout, since sounding understandable matters more early on than sounding textbook perfect.

As comfort builds, I introduce local expressions specific to whichever region a student is actually living in, since generic Spanish rarely matches local speech patterns exactly. Long term residents often need help decoding fast, informal speech from neighbours or shopkeepers, so listening practice stays heavily weighted toward natural conversation. Expats newer to the language instead focus on building enough vocabulary to handle basic errands independently and confidently. Role play scenarios stay grounded in real situations students actually face that week, not hypothetical textbook examples.

I remind students constantly that sounding local matters more than sounding formally correct in daily life. Mimicking regional rhythm and intonation genuinely speeds up how quickly locals understand and respond warmly. Topics stay closely tied to a student's actual neighbourhood and routine, keeping lessons immediately useful. My focus throughout remains practical, helping students feel genuinely settled, not just linguistically competent.
