About Anna

I recently earned my Bacherlor's in Film Studies from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT, where I studied under industry professionals such as AO Scott, Mirko Rucnov, Yaya Simakov, and Lisa Dombrowski. Their guidance as working film critics, filmmakers, and academics has given me a concrete understanding of both the theory and practice of cinema. I have also completed supplementary courses at Boston University and NYFA.

In my professional experience, I have completed several filmmaking projects of my own, founded a nonprofit production studio (Anthropocine), published multiple essays ranging from casual film criticism to peer-reviewed academic papers, and served as the Editor-in-Chief for Intercut, Wesleyan's student-run media journal. I have also been employed as a production course assistant, research assistant, and distribution intern. As such, I have amassed an eclectic array of real-world knowledge, from video production to film distribution to editorial publishing, that crosses the bridge between theory and practice. With this extensive experience in both film production and academia, I pride myself on a broad and holistic approach to cinema and media studies.

I truly love film in all of its forms, and love to share that passion with others. I am truly honored for the opportunity to support you on your journey into cinema, whether you are a filmmaker, writer, or scholar. Ask me about the avant-garde movements of the 60s and 70s, the New Queer Wave, Hong Kong cinema, or the new "incel canon" –– these are some of my favorite cinema topics as of late!

Cinema is an incredibly broad and vast subject –– so let's tailor the journey to you! Whatever brings you to learn about film will serve as the backbone to our studies, whether it be a course you are seeking more support in, a filmmaking project you are undertaking, or simply a personal passion you have discovered for a specific director, genre, or movement.

Whatever material you bring to the table, we will dissect and analyze it together. Through a continuous dialogue, I will tailor my responses to your needs and curiosities to guide you towards further understanding. Your passion and interest will always be the guiding force for our studies; after all, art is about self-expression! I will also search for and pull in any supporting materials that you may find helpful, such as essays, videos, or how-to guides.

Up to this point, I have primarily advised college-aged students on production logistics, storytelling essentials, and essay-writing. However, I have also advised older graduates looking to begin their filmmaking journeys and am comfortable working with all ages. I am especially qualified to advise on crafting film criticism, analytical essays, screenplays, and storyboards/production overviews (including budgets, call-sheets, and other logistics).

In the past, my sessions have revolved around feedback and suggestions for my students' work, which then pushed us towards exploring new genres or movements. For example, I may notice that you are gravitating towards a certain approach or structure originating from a certain time period, location, or director; I can then share more information on that subject and point us towards further discovery and understanding. I have helped shaped all sorts of projects, and pride myself on helping my students identify and strengthen their "voice."

Details

Travel fees are determined by time and method of transportation. For most locations, 5 dollars covers my subway fare there and back. Any travel exceeding 60 mins will be billed at an additional $5/hour, rounded to the half-hour.

If a location is not subway accessible, we may need to discuss alternate transportation methods that work for both of us.

I also offer asynchronous feedback on scripts/films/exercises/essays/etc., where I leave detailed comments and suggestions on material you bring to me within a specific time frame, without discussing it face-to-face. This is billed at approximately $17/hour. Reviewing a short film or essay usually takes around 1-1.5 hours, whereas a longer essay or screenplay may take 2-4. I will assess and give you a quote once given an idea of the length of material.

Happy to offer a needs-based sliding scale approach if you cannot afford the cost of a lesson –– inquire if you think you may need.
