About Yenn

I have recently graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Master’s degree in Global Media Communication. Before that, I gained a B.A. (Honours) degree in Chinese Language & Literature and Global Studies at Shantou University, China. Besides, I have earned the Certificate for Teachers of Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages issued by Confucius Institute Headquarters, Beijing, China since 2018.

I am a native Mandarin and Hakka Chinese speaker with full professional proficiency in English and Cantonese. Besides the Media and Communications field, I have had a constant passion for Chinese language teaching since my undergraduate studies. I have gained specialised knowledge of Chinese Studies and Intercultural Communication, with about one-year of experience in Mandarin Chinese teaching to adults in China. In my role as a part-time Chinese teacher to international students during my senior year, to tailor to the needs of the students, I actively requested for their feedback about their motivation and opinions on the teaching styles and then devised proper teaching plans. I utilised multimedia tools such as video and PowerPoint slides to visualise the materials while practicing their language skills. In the end, I have built a strong friendship with my students and they all passed the highest level of HSK exams with impressive results. Alongside the teaching, I attended the weekly meeting to report the performance and learning outcomes of students to the senior staff, brainstormed ideas to organise extra-curriculum activities, and offered support for other projects in the Centre for Developing the Chinese Language. Consequently, my teaching ability got approved by the Director of the Chinese Language Centre and I received a recommendation letter from him.

I love serving and helping people as much as I can. Currently, I am working as a Freelance Translator and volunteering in TED Translators to transcribe and translate the video subtitles from English to Chinese and vice versa to help spread the inspiring stories. I am also volunteering in STREAT Moving Feast to translate their English documents to Hakka Chinese and vice versa.

About the lesson

In terms of teaching, I always put myself in students' shoes and design the teaching plans tailored to their needs and expectations. Hence, before and during the teaching process, I will actively gather students' information about their motivation, goals, and opinions on the teaching styles. On top of teaching language knowledge, I would try different means to create a fun learning environment by implementing a variety of facilitation techniques such as film clips, audio-visual tools, Chinese games, etc. In this way, students can be immersed in a more effective and interesting Chinese learning atmosphere. Meanwhile, no excellence can be achieved without consistent practices. Based on my past teaching experience, I designed English vocabulary and grammar tests for Chinese students in high school in my role as a part-time English teacher. During my third year of Bachelor study, I help organised teaching activities including Chinese traditional games to guide the local students aged from 6 to 13 at the University of Haifa and Haifa museums during my short-term education internship in Israel. During my senior year, I designed Chinese language tests in oral presentations, reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing for advanced Mandarin adult learners. Based on the language level of the students, I created the reading comprehension tests weekly to examine the students’ understanding and assigned the writing tasks related to the reading materials. In this way, it would be more effective to improve their Chinese reading and writing skills. Apart from classroom learning, I would also create extra-curricular activities for students to have more practice and experience real Chinese culture. For this aspect, my other teaching philosophy is making full advantage of your surroundings. For example, in the current situation of Australia, I would suggest students using language apps such as HelloTalk, Memrise, and Meetup app to find a language partner and set a regular practice time to exchange language and culture. In this way, not only you can practice your target languages but make new friends. How fun it sounds^^
