About Alastair
As noted, I'm a 4th year philosophy and politics student. I'm diligent and hardworking, but I think philosophy and/or poltics, under the right circumstances can be really fun to learn about. It's a feeling I'd love to inspire in other people, as I think the critical thinking skills that it provides you are so important to navigating our information-laden world, and that we unfortunately seem to have a real paucity of it. I'm quite laid-back in my demeanour, and I enjoy the funny side in things.
In my experience, having been through tutoring myself, being bored and seeing tutoring sessions as a chore is the de facto response. Creating sessions that students therefore actually enjoy is the only way to foster proper learning and get a bang for your buck. So it's vital to me that the student has some fun along the way, and I can absolutely do that through philosophy - what can I say, it's probably the most fun subject full stop. My areas of interest in philosophy are analytical, namely epistemology and metaphysics, which conveniently lines up perfectly with Scottish Highers and A-level curriculum (the curriculum is covered in full and in more depth in university, as one might expect)!

The most important, and perhaps the best aspect of philosophy is critical thinking. It's a learnable skill that allows you to rigorously assess not only philosophy content, but all information that you come across. It is a tool that sharpens your mind and lets you separate wheat from chaff, providing you with a defence against the overwhelming stream of information we come across, especially in the digital age. Critical thinking isn't just a matter for philosophy, but for the rest of one's life.
My goal as a tutor is to develop a student's critical thinking skills as we go through the curriculum, while providing the necessary support to achieve their academic goals, whether that be mastery of content or the writing and structuring of their essays. Lessons would last an hour. I have previously tutored A-level philosophy to a family friend, and am hoping to continue provided they graduated. During lessons, I like to start by covering and explaining content, and then to challenge their understanding through arguments and thought experiments (this part is usually quite fun, and importantly, solidifies their learning). When exams are upcoming, I will ask the student to complete past papers, and take time to assess it so that I can properly advise them on how to improve.

Perfect! Alsatair helps me so much with my undergrad essay in both philosophy and politics, his teaching style is engaging , in a very clear and logical style, allowing me to construct my essay to a better and clearer one, definitely recommend for anyone struggling with their essay! he could clear up your mind and provide very on point feedback . I like the lesson a lot, good tutor
I was incredibly impressed by Alastair's academic rigour and passion for philosophy. It was especially notable to see how diligent he was in verifying information before believing it, and it inspired me to be diligent on that front too.
I was having a lot of issues understanding some of the concepts we were learning during my course, so having Alastair as a tutor was a relief as he was able to explain things in a clear manner as well as help appreciate philosophy on a deeper level. Would highly recommend him.
Helped me a lot with my essay last year, highly recommend
I’ve always had a passion for philosophy, however while studying for my A levels, I realised my exam sitting confidence was low. Particularly, I had trouble with structuring essays and communicating my ideas clearly.
Luckily I found Alastair. His lessons were enjoyable and highly informative. After each lesson, I saw marginal improvements in my writing and critical thinking skills. Alastair helped reconcile my passion for philosophy with my lack of confidence, by giving me the tools and insight necessary to properly express my self. Moreover, I feel as though the skills I developed actually improved my grades across multiple classes.
Alastairs experienced insight not only improved my academic rigour, but also opened my eyes to the vastness of philosophy. This quickly made me grow my appreciation for the topic!
Ultimately, I would absolutely recommend Alastair as a tutor. He has helped develop my interests, skills and confidence; invaluable qualities as I continue my academic journey and proceed through life.Alastair is a hardworking, disciplined student who strives only for the best in what he seeks to accomplish. Along with his passionate drive for excellence, Alastair is an incredible conversationalist, making him an ideal option for a student looking for a friendly tutor.
Alastair was super knowledgeable and presented ideas that I hadn't thought of before. I was challenged in ways I didn't think I would've been otherwise and my critical thinking skills have definitely been expanded upon. The debate style he uses helped in making lessons engaging and also generally for practicing my own debate skills. All in all, was a great time and I felt like I learned a lot!
