About Nicholas

I graduated with my BSc honours in mathematics, and then completed my Master's in Mathematics at Waterloo. After graduating, I began a full-time position at Okanagan College where I tutored the college's students in math and physics. A year later, I transitioned to being a full-time instructor at Okanagan College. I have taught a variety of undergraduate mathematics and statistics courses including first-year calculus. Because of my experience both as a tutor and an instructor, I am able to provide an unparalleled tutoring experience. While I have now transitioned to medical school at UBC Okanagan, tutoring math is one of my greatest joys. I look forward to working with you!

Because of my passion for math and physics, I take deep joy in helping students succeed in these areas. Many students who struggle with math or science are convinced they are not cut out for math or physics. Often, however, their struggle is a result of poor teaching. I believe that with the correct teaching methodology, anyone can succeed in the mathematical subjects. I like to tutor by first understanding the difficulties a student is having with the material. Once we have identified areas of difficulty, I enjoy motivating the underlying concept we are studying with respect to some practical application. Even in the abstractness of math or physics, this is often possible and allows students to get a better "grip" on what we are studying. Next, we properly define the concept under examination and how they relate to the bigger picture of math or physics. Finally, I prefer to do as many example problems as possible. This is especially important in the area of math and physics. In my opinion, examples are the best way to solidify difficult material.

  • When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

In high school calculus I discovered "mathematical proofs" and found them extremely interesting. I ended up memorizing a proof of the fundamental theorem of calculus and enthusiastically shared it with my classmates. There was a sense of value and accomplishment in having a deep understanding of mathematics and I loved talking about math with my classmates. My interest and enthusiasm about the subject has only deepened as I've continued to learn.
  • What makes you passionate about your subject?

One of the fundamental characteristics of human beings is our ability to understand something of ourselves and the world around us. People have a natural curiosity for trying to figure out why things are the way they are. I find myself interested in mathematics and physics because it gives me the pleasure of understanding the natural world and the abstract, mathematical world.
  • What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

My favourite part of tutoring is when the student has that "light-bulb" moment and everything clicks and makes sense. These moments are the payoff for all the difficult work the student put into the concept. What makes me a "superprof" is my ability to break down difficult concepts, as well as my experience as a tutor and teacher. I currently work at Okanagan College as a full-time tutor in math and physics. I also have experience teaching undergraduate mathematics courses and undergraduate physics labs and seminars. This means that the students I tutor privately have the benefit of working with a professional tutor who knows the best practices for learning math and physics.
  • Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.

Although I have been inspired and encouraged by almost all of my professors, my biggest role model in the area of math and physics would be the mathematician Bernard Riemann. Riemann made several contributions to mathematics including Riemannian Geometry and the Riemann Integral. He had a terribly difficult life and died at 39 years old from tuberculosis. Riemann is a great reminder that it's possible to persevere and do great work in the midst of difficulty.
  • What are your keys to success?

I think one of the biggest keys to success in life is humility. Being willing to learn from others, and recognizing that one doesn't know everything allows one to grow personally and professionally. The second key to success, especially in math or physics, is perseverance. Students who embrace a challenge and persevere through the difficulty of learning are much more likely to become masters of the material.
