About Jonny

Without struggle and discomfort - we cannot make progress.

All through life I have to remind myself of this. There are times when I want to give up and bury my head in the sand. The outcome of denial is nothing to be proud of.

The very reason for me becoming a qualified teacher and entering into the profession was to inspire young people and arm them with the skills and confidence to succeed.

After my GCSEs I chose to work and earn money through an apprenticeship. My experience of working in banking, hospitality and customer service enabled me to gain real life experience before returning to higher education as a mature student.

I studied for Media and Film at the University of Sussex before completing my teacher training at London Metropolitan University.

For the past 15 years I have worked as a freelance filmmaker and teacher of English and Media Studies. I have been Head of Department, Head of Year 12 and very fortunate to have worked with some amazing students from all walks of life.

The foundations of English Language allow you to express your thoughts and opinions in a concise and technically accurate manner. Through easy to understand guides and student examples we will tackle past papers and learn time saving techniques that tick all the examiner boxes.

English Literature develops our cultural capital and builds in our understanding of the world around us. Revision guides with essay plans are useful tools but understanding the difference between a 'thoughtful' response compared to a 'perceptive' response is where those extra marks are gained.

As a professional filmmaker with a honours degree in Media Practice & Theory I can support students in both Media Studies and Film Studies. I have experience in delivering exciting lessons in both GCSE and A-Level - theoretical exam prep and practical assignments is where I can support you.

About the lesson

A talented, well organised and strong classroom teacher, who has a proven track record of achieving excellent pupil attainment.

We all learn differently and it's my responsibility to find the best practice to suit my student's development. I believe in high expectations built around trust. We learn from making mistakes so it's important to have an environment where students can feel comfortable taking risks and trying new methods. A typical 30 minute lesson can be the foundation of longer learning activities that can be achieved in 60 minute lessons.

My experience is within the secondary school setting in London and Surrey. I have taught English at Key Stage 3 (Year 7-9) and Key Stage 4 (Year 10-11).

I'm passionate about raising standards across all age groups and subject areas. I pride myself on building and nurturing relationships. I foster and maintain a positive learning climate where pupils of all abilities and interests can reach their full potential.

As an outstanding and inspirational teacher with very high personal standards, I will be committed to the learning and development of all students. You will develop high expectations of yourself because we will work together to enable your progress as an individual.
