About José Luis

I work as an online Spanish teacher at the University of Seattle in Bratislava. Although during my university studies I specialized in teacher training of Spanish as a foreign language and in applied linguistics in teaching Spanish as a foreign language, what is my true passion. Teaching Spanish online is my current focus and where the most of my research currently is.

About the lesson

My teaching philosophy is based on a belief that learning needs to be student centered and that students need to be equal partners in the learning process. Every student is unique and the teacher has to adapt to the necessities and interests of their students. My role involves using my expertise to put the necessary resources in the hands of the students or more likely to be sure that my students are well equipped to find and evaluate the resources they need to answer their questions. In my Spanish on-site lessons I use the Communicative Approach. This approach makes use of real-life situations that necessitate communication. The real-life simulations change from day to day. Students' motivation to learn comes from their desire to communicate in meaningful ways about meaningful topics. Thanks to this approach, my students are speaking Spanish from the very first moment. Also, I believe that the perfect Spanish book doesn’t exit unless you create it. Because of that I have created my own material and I´m renewing it every semester. A sample can be seen here: (concealed information) However, in my Spanish online courses I´m using a mixed flip class with outstanding results. Every single semester I introduce improvements in my online courses (Moodle): new activities, new grammar, and new videos. Right now, I´m focusing in teaching online because it was the topic of my PhD. As a conclusion, my teaching philosophy evolved from many years of teaching experience. As I reflect on my beliefs regarding teaching and learning, I find that my mission as a teacher is threefold:

To promote positive and significant learning
To spark learner enthusiasm for learning
To transmit my passion for the Spanish language and culture
