About Chris

I am a qualified Mathematics teacher with a degree in Pure Mathematics and a PGCE in Secondary Mathematics from the University of Sussex.

I have experience teaching maths both one-to-one and in the classroom, and I'm comfortable with every topic in GCSE and A level maths. I can help at any level, but I specialise in giving students that extra push to achieve top grades including grade 9 or A*.

Alongside maths, I have years of experience teaching guitar and accordion, working with adults and children across various styles and skill levels. Teaching in a wide range of settings has given me a student-led approach to tutoring, adapting my teaching style to your individual learning style, using the most effective techniques for each student.

About the lesson

I believe that every student is different and requires a personalised teaching style suited to meet their personal learning style.

During our first lesson we will use our time to talk about your specific goals, and then go over some simple questions to practise, so I can assess your current level and learning style. From there we can take things at your pace. Not spending too long on the things you find easy, focusing on the things you find more challenging, revisiting these topics in future lessons, and moving on to more challenging tasks that stretch your conceptual understanding as we go.

A usual lesson would last an hour or an hour and a half depending on the student. Starting with 10 mins of fun warm-up exercises based on what we have looked at during the previous lesson to assess how you've progressed throughout the week. The next 10-20 minutes we would go over a particular area of maths that you'd like to develop, discussing ideas, and looking at low-stakes worked examples. Once that's all completed, we will spend the rest of the lesson either consolidating what we have learnt with past paper questions, or moving on to another topic.

This is just a guideline however, I have a very flexible and person-centred approach to teaching, adapting each lesson to meet the desires and interests of a given student on a given day.

Perfect! My daughter has flourished in her sessions with Chris and his calm approach has made her feel motivated and more confident in her abilities with Maths. He gives her really good feedback and constructive advise which makes her realise she can tackle the maths problems with the methods he suggests. Highly recommended.

Chris excels in both of these areas. Chris is able to teach both practical and theoretical elements of music and guitar in a way that is fun and unique. I started having lessons with Chris around 16 months ago and in that timeframe my guitar playing as well as theoretical music knowledge has accelerated at a tremendous rate. I always dreamed of playing guitar and thanks to Chris this has become a reality. He’s exceptionally patient and provides a relaxed and reassuring environment in his lessons, no matter your level Chris will be able to take your playing to the next level and beyond!
