About Josephine
I am a qualified high school teacher (French/Society and Culture) and have been teaching in high schools in both Scotland and Australia for 5 years. In that time, I have had 3 years experience tutoring both English literature and essay-writing, to exam-level students. I achieved 94/100 in my HSC (equivalent to A-Levels/Advanced Higher), and received high distinctions in the English subjects I took as electives in my undergraduate degree. I have an Bachelor degree in French (language and literature) and International Relations, and a Masters degree in Teaching (Secondary). I am passionate about literature and also read for pleasure, I currently run a bookclub for friends and family where I organise discussion questions and provide stimuli for each meeting.

With regard to literature and essay-writing, my teaching method includes explicit teaching of skills needed for critical analysis - including understanding the essay-form, signposting, understanding of different literary techniques and how authors use them to create meaning.
I would approach a new topic (for example, a new novel) by first discussing context and the author, then plot. I like to use questioning techniques to develop discuss with students, to help them to develop independent ideas and understandings of the content. We would discuss characters, themes, and then narrow to literary techniques and study of certain passages
Following this, I would work through essay using different techniques - getting students to write only an introduction and conclusion, or provide them with the body of an essay and get them to work backward to the essay question, or have them write a short first-person account from one of the characters point of view, or even provide them with differently graded example answers and get them to discuss which one is the best answer/worst answer and why.
If they were studying for an exam, we would work on use of time, memorising quotes and essay plans.
