About Lucy
About me: I studied English Literature at St Hugh’s College, Oxford University and have an MA Oxon in English Literature and Language. After graduation, I obtained a PGCE teaching qualification (with QTS) and became an English teacher. After four years teaching English at Stowe School, I moved to Harrow School, London. I taught English and Drama at Harrow School for nine years and was the Head of English and Senior Head of Subjects, before moving to New York City in the summer of 2023. I now work as a full-time novelist of historical fiction, and can offer tutoring and mentoring to children and adults, online only. I have thirteen years of senior school teaching experience. While Head of English at Harrow School, I wrote and assessed the annual English entrance tests, as well as conducting admissions interviews. I have taught IGCSE English Language, IGCSE English Literature, A Level English Literature, and A Level Theatre Studies. When leading the English Department at Harrow School, the majority of the A Level students achieved A* and A grades. I am experienced with supporting, grading, and moderating coursework essays, and I encourage my students to read widely and develop their research and writing skills. I am also an examiner for the OCR English Literature A Level. I have guided many students in their University applications and my students have gone on to study at top Universities in the UK and US, including, amongst many others, Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, Harvard, Princeton, Brown, Columbia, and Juilliard. I am an author of historical fiction, with my novels published in the UK and the US. As well as academic tutoring, I can offer creative writing mentoring to children and adults.

Lucy gave a phenomenal virtual talk and Q&A session to over 70 Grade Six students about her experience as a writer, author and ballet dancer. The students were absolutely gripped by her presentation on what inspired her latest novel 'Clara and Olivia'.
Lucy has a very calm, composed demeanour. Her talk was very engaging; she used a variety of photos, props (she showed us a pair of her own ballet shoes), she also read a chapter of her novel which the students really enjoyed.
It was evident from the presentation that Lucy is not only an excellent writer but also an excellent communicator, her skills as an English teacher at Harrow shone through. The talk was perfectly levelled at my students, her sense of pace and timing were all superb. She clearly made a deep and positive impression on the students as for the rest of the school day I received question after question about Lucy Ashe and her novel.
Would highly, highly recommend and would love Lucy Ashe to do the same talk next year!
Lucy was my Department Head at Harrow School. Never have I worked with someone so skilled at getting the best out of students and colleagues alike. Lucy is a model teacher whose impressive subject knowledge and wide-ranging teaching approaches allow her to students to thrive as learners and to achieve consistently impressive results. Her passion for literature, her discipline, her warmth, and her enthusiasm for the profession make her a wonderful teacher and for me personally, an inspirational department leader.
Lucy Ashe is an incredibly knowledgeable teacher with an inspired, and clear approach to English literature as her classes are not only highly informative but also delightfully interesting.
Having been a student of Lucy's throughout my A levels, I always felt like I was in good hands especially when studying the more difficult classical works. Lucy always took the time to ensure she broke down all the texts clearly and offer ample critical analysis that went beyond the words on the page.
When working on essays Lucy provided detailed feedback with examples on how to enhance my writing whilst also kindly challenging my weaker arguments such that I would push myself. Ultimately, this approach to learning gave me the confidence to become a much better, well-rounded writer with a real grasp for language.
In preparation for my university applications, Lucy was also a tremendous resource as she was able to source a lot of literary materials which ultimately gave me a successful unique edge amongst other applicants.
Aside from being a fantastic instructor, Lucy is very kind, patient, encouraging and understanding person.
She also has a very full worldly background, making her classes that much more fruitful.
Lucy truly embodies what it means to be a great teacher as she inspired me to further engage in the world of English literature.
Lucy is an outstanding teacher. She guided both me and my brother through our English A-Levels with A*s. Lucy teaches with precision, clarity, tremendous knowledge and passion for her subject. Her ever-evolving interest in English Literature is inspirational, and her experience in exam technique is unrivalled. Lucy has an extremely considerate and kind teaching style, and a real drive for helping students to learn, progress, and find what really interests them. Lucy has given me insight into nuanced methods, routes and materials for thinking about texts, with fantastic, thoroughly supportive essay-writing guidance. I am now studying English Literature at Oxford, and feel incredibly lucky to have been taught and inspired by Lucy.
