About Elizabeth
I'm Beth, a published author and twice-shortlisted Poet of the Year. I've delivered papers at academic conferences, published essays in academic journals, and appeared on panels at literature festivals around the country.
Last year, I graduated Lancaster University with a First-Class Honours in English Literature and Creative Writing, achieving the highest grade in every one of my academic modules. Now, I study a Master's in Creative Writing with English Literary Studies.
I've worked with the Lancaster University English Literature & Creative Writing department for two years, delivering workshops and lessons in schools around the North West. Here, it was my job to find ways to engage every pupil by finding a way that they can personally relate to course texts, discover something that interests them about a character, and to explore new ways of creative writing that inspire them.
The reason I tutor students is because I, like many others, struggled with the methods that school taught me. So, I found my own ways of doing things that still last with me today and now influence new generations of students. I want to help make English Literature and English Language accessible to you, so you can thrive in your exams and get the grade you deserve.

My lessons are for GCSE and A Level students in secondary schools at any level from 1-9 or F-A*.
Our first lesson together will be a chat about what you're struggling with or what you'd like to work on. We'll talk about the sorts of things that you'd benefit most from and draw up a syllabus together for future sessions, tailored to you.
The two key things about my lessons are: 1) making the mark scheme accessible and 2) making English engaging.
We'll go through the mark scheme together to split it into easier to understand chunks. At the start of each lesson, we'll talk about which part of the mark scheme the lesson will touch on and how you can signpost this in your work. But, because I believe the best way to succeed in a subject is to find something in it that excites you, our lessons will focus on texts/passages you find interesting, teaching you methods that work for you, and introducing an element of fun into the programme.
SEN/SEND-friendly, these lessons are well-structured. They start with 3 goals, an opening task to warm up, and end with 1-3 manageable homework tasks (because one of the most important parts of this process is that I understand how much work you already have going on, the aim of this will be to keep additional work to a minimum). The end of the lesson I will also explain the 3 goals of our next lesson so you know what's coming up next time. Each lesson is from 30 mins to 2 hours depending on your preference.
Just like you, my lessons are dynamic. Everyone learns differently and some information will process differently even within the same brain. That's why I use a combination of speaking, listening, reading, and writing tasks that use colour, pictures, highlighting, and other kinetic interaction. Suitable for any age (right up to Degree-level), this is one of the most effective ways of learning because it forces the brain to use every part of itself to process information.
My specialist GCSE and A Level texts include: Animal Farm, A Christmas Carol, Macbeth, Romeo & Juliet, An Inspector Calls, Lord of the Flies, Jane Eyre, Frankenstein, Pride & Prejudice, Much Ado About Nothing, Twelfth Night, Jekyll & Hyde, Handmaid's Tale, Wuthering Heights, Great Gatsby, Othello, Dracula, The Colour Purple, 1984, Top Girls, Carol Ann Duffy, Love Poetry Anthology, and the Power & Conflict Poetry Anthology. I'm happy to adapt to any other texts beyond these.
I specialise in AQA exam boards but have very good knowledge of others.
I have 2 years of experience tutoring GCSE to Degree-level in English Literature, English Language, and Creative Writing. In July 2023, I graduated with First-Class Honours in BA English Literature and Creative Writing. Now, I study at Master's level. I have published essays in academic journals and presented papers at academic conferences. With the English Literature and Creative Writing department at Lancaster University, I visit secondary schools and colleges around the country helping students engage with the subject and deliver workshops on curriculum material.

Elizabeth helped my daughter’s GCSE grades improve from a 3 to a 5 in just a few lessons. Her understanding of the grading and marking system, together with a ‘think-outside-the-box’ approach to my daughter’s dyslexia problems was amazing. Elizabeth’s enthusiasm for the subject was contagious and for the first time my daughter said she actually understood how to answer the questions and exactly what was required within her answers. Would not hesitate to recommend Elizabeth!
