About Jo
As someone who was once an international student in the UK, I truly understand the challenges and language barriers you may face when studying in an English-speaking environment. Now, with over 20 years of experience teaching English for Academic Purposes at leading UK universities, I can bridge the gap between student struggles and academic expectations. I hold a PhD in Language Education, which has given me a strong foundation in understanding both the technical aspects of language learning and the academic demands of university-level studies. Having been on both sides—first as a student and now as a tutor—I’m uniquely positioned to guide you through these challenges with empathy and practical strategies. My students always praise me for my genuineness and approachability. My Approach to Tutoring: I take a student-centred approach to tutoring, meaning each lesson is tailored to fit what you need and want to focus on. Whether it’s academic writing, speaking skills, just general language improvement, assignments writing coach, or dissertation supervision, I make sure to adjust each lesson based on your goals and requests. My aim is to make you feel confident and comfortable using English in your studies. How I Teach? I like to keep things interactive and practical, with a mix of exercises, discussions, and examples that relate to real-life academic situations. We’ll work on the areas that matter most to you, and I’ll make sure to break things down so you’re not overwhelmed. Every lesson is designed to help you overcome any language challenges and get you ready to succeed in your academic journey. Typical Lesson Length: Lessons usually last between 1 and 3 hours, depending on what you’re looking for. This gives us enough time to dive into the material and make sure you’re comfortable with everything before we wrap up. My Experience: I hold a PhD in Language Education from the University of York and have been teaching English for Academic Purposes in top UK universities for over 20 years. I’ve helped countless students improve their academic English skills and prepare for success in university-level studies. Who I Teach?
