About Patrick
I served as a full-time faculty member in Old Dominion University's English Department for eight years and instructed courses in Literature, Critical Theory, and Advanced Composition. During my tenure at ODU I taught and mentored over 1500 undergraduates, including several hundred students enrolled in the Patricia and Douglas Perry Honors College. I consistently received high marks in student course evaluations, was commended in annual reappointment letters for delivering expert instruction and fostering academic achievement by my Department Chair and the Dean of the College of Arts and Letters, and was accorded ODU's Shining Star Award for teaching excellence by my students. My collegiate teaching experience uniquely qualifies me to illuminate, clarify, and instill core skills vital to success in the modern English classroom.

Complex reasoning and intricate sentence structure can intimidate students who haven't had extensive practice in advanced reading comprehension, critical thinking, and academic writing. I demystify the complexities of academic reading and writing through a step-by-step breakdown of the techniques academic professionals use to understand the content of written material and to present their own ideas in clear, precise, articulate compositions. Essentially, I model scholarly methods of reading and response while offering paraphrases that convert academic language into more accessible layman's terms. This allows students to assimilate the conventions of academic reading and writing as they learn to associate new terms and structures with familiar words and phrasing that lie within their existing "communication comfort zones."
