About Ian

I have well over 10,000 hours of experience on the drums, built through years of consistent practice, weekly church gigs, and paid performances in front of hundreds of people. My first instrument was piano, which I started playing around age 4. By age 7, I had shifted my focus to drums—and from then on, I spent most of my time playing and practicing them. In high school, I expanded into music production, songwriting, and video creation, posting my work on social media. That’s also when I picked up photography and graphic design, skills that continue to shape my creative vision today. During my junior year of HS, I was accepted into Berklee College of Music with a scholarship. Since it was my dream school—and high school wasn’t working for me—I left early, got my GED, and used the rest of the year to focus fully on my art. After completing three semesters at Berklee, I realized I could grow more on my own and moved to Boston to stay connected to the inspiring musical community I’d found. Now, I play drums and produce songs at an advanced level, piano and bass at an intermediate level, and guitar at a beginner level. So why choose me? Because music chose me. It runs in my family—my cousin is 6x Grammy-winning jazz vocalist Samara Joy—and I’ve spent my life following that path. Teaching music isn’t just what I do—it’s who I am.

About the lesson

I teach other parts of music too, like production—but for now, let’s talk about drums.

I teach drums the same way I practice them: one step at a time.
Whether you’ve never picked up a pair of sticks, or you’ve been drumming for years, I’ll help you grow—step by step—by giving you the tools you need to build your skill and confidence on the kit.

One of the things I love most is helping students play like their favorite drummers—whether that means learning specific grooves, exploring their style, or building the technique they use. We’ll break it down together and make it your own.

What makes me different is that I’m mostly self-taught. I’ve spent over 15 years playing, listening, and learning music on my own. School wasn’t always the best fit for me, so I know what it’s like to be in classes that don’t feel exciting or helpful.

That’s why I teach in a way that centers you.
Before we really begin, I’ll learn what kind of music you love, what your goals are, and what makes you feel inspired. Then, I’ll create a lesson plan just for you.
