About Benjamin

My name is Benjamin and I am a French art historian. My academic training in the English language started at the University of Toronto where I received a BA (summa cum laude) in History of Art and Philosophy. I also hold a Masters from the Courtauld Institute of Art in London in the history of Northern Renaissance art, and a Masters from KU Leuven in Philosophy. I am about to begin a PhD in History of Art and Ideas in London.

About the lesson

Hello there,

I am offering private lessons for students in history of art and architecture. I am a graduate researcher in this field specialised in Northern Renaissance art. I have broad art historical training from antiquity up to contemporary art practices as well as in methods of research, theory, and analysis.

The nature of my support will vary depending on the student’s needs, level, and learning goals. The remit of our sessions and learning outcomes will be established and agreed upon during our initial session. This course is suitable for A-level students who wish to prepare themselves for university-level discourse, or bachelor students who seek support in their coursework or their thesis project, or who wish to refine their understanding of the field in preparation for graduate research. A session could focus more heavily on improving one’s writing and editorial skills; coaching one’s visual analysis skills and practicing constructing arguments about an object’s material composition; discussing course material and readings through close-readings and formal discourse. Philosophically informed and interdisciplinary approaches to the study of art and art objects may also be considered where it would benefit the student. This might include exploring theological discourse relevant to understanding how Christian art would function visually in its historical context, covering the archaeological basics that frame our access to, and understanding of, ancient art, or even discussing the operating definition of what art is in the 21st century and considering how its social function has implicated contemporary art.

I am happy to arrange visits to museums or historical sites relevant to the student’s course where we can discuss works directly. I found this method to be the most enriching aspect of my studies at the Courtauld Institute of Art here in London.
