Here are my teaching methodology and some ideas:
1. Knowledge through language
When I just started teaching Mandarin to foreign language speakers, I noticed that most of the students
greeted Chinese teachers by saying “你好”(nǐ hǎo)even they had known their teachers for more than a
year. It’s understandable since Chinese textbooks translate “你好” into “Hello” or “Hi”. But they are actually
different because of etymology and culture background. The simplified character “好” derives from an ancient Chinese characters inscribed on the oracle bones. It shows a woman is cuddling her baby, which
emphasizes on the importance of fertility in agricultural society. And its meaning evolves into “I wish you well” in modern society. Wishes are nice, but they increase social distance. It is a phrase reserved for nodding acquaintance or someone people just met. Whereas “hello” is the alteration of “hallo”, “holla”, a shout to attract people’s attention. It rises to popularity as an informal greeting after the invention and spread of telephone. It’s not difficult to translate one language to another nowadays, but it’s challengeable to convey the idea hidden behind the meaning of the vocabularies or sentences. Thus it’s not enough for students to know “how to say” but to figure out the reason and logic of the expressions.
2. Learn updated Chinese language and news about China
I've read some Chinese textbooks which contain the words people seldom use nowadays but learners still keep memorizing them and consider them as key words. So during my lessons, I won't choose a certain textbook(except HSK) but summarize vocabulary, grammar, link words, sentence structures etc. which are mostly used in our daily life, and practice them using flashcards, online games to help you learn by heart. I will also share the news and trendy topics discussed mostly by people in China.
3.Speak more Chinese in the lessons
Some beginner students like to speak English in the lessons even though they know how to speak those words in Chinese. To create an immersive learning environment, I would encourage you to speak Chinese as much as possible when you are having lessons with me.
4.Feedback after lessons
After each lesson, I will give feedback to the student via email including
①Highlight
- Varied vocabulary and sentence structure
- Extended response of question in Speaking & Writing practice
②Error
- Pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary errors
- Suggestion & Task to enhance your memory of correct answers
③Attitude(for children under supervision of parents)
- Attendance
- Performance during lesson
