About Matthew

Brought up in the UK, a graduate of Literae Humaniores at Magdalen College Oxford, since 2022 I have worked as a substitute teacher with young (1st/2nd grade) pupils and children with special needs. I also moonlight as a trivia host so am perfectly happy educating adults too. I bring humor (with or without a 'u') to all my interactions with people whatever their age and am here to try to make the things that I love fun to whoever I'm teaching about them.

About the lesson

Working as a substitute teacher for first and second graders, and as a weekly trivia host for persons of drinking age, I am comfortable tailoring my approach to different ages and ambitions.

The good thing about classics is that the textbooks take a very long time to go out of date. The Cambridge Latin Course worked for much younger me and I can start you from the beginning of that or jump straight into real classical texts, all up to you!

Perfect! Matthew is an amazing teacher! He's extremely knowledgeable in Latin and English words. He's helping me with Latin via Ovid translations and vocabulary from Joyce's Ulysses. He's doing a tremendous job! I highly recommend him!

Wendy is focussed and curious about all aspects of the English language - she seems to be on top of her Latin as well, but leaping into Joyce, Shakespeare and the labyrinthine complexities of the OED proved that she is passionate about words, whatever language they come in. It was delightful to get to share in her enthusiasm and unique approach to learning!

I have known Matt since we met at Oxford University. As well as being one of the finest classicists of his generation, Matt has an enormous breadth of knowledge and a true love of learning.
