About George

I'm a Politics PhD researcher at the University of York with four years' experience teaching at university level across Politics, International Relations, and related subjects. My teaching was recognised with a GTA Teaching Excellence Award in 2025.

Before my PhD I completed a First Class degree in Spanish and Portuguese and a Distinction-level Masters, both at the University of Manchester, so I bring strong subject knowledge across politics, social science, and languages.

I've tutored students in a range of settings, including young people in alternative education through a specialist agency, and I genuinely enjoy adapting my approach to whoever I'm working with. I'm patient, straightforward, and focused on building the skills and confidence students need to perform.

Whether you're preparing for A-level exams, working on a university essay, or trying to get to grips with a tricky concept, I'll work with you at your pace and make sure you leave each session with something concrete to take forward.

My approach to tutoring is built around the student rather than the subject. Before diving into content, I spend time understanding where a student is struggling, how they best absorb information, and what they're actually trying to achieve.
For politics specifically, I focus on building the analytical skills that underpin good performance at any level: constructing arguments, evaluating evidence, understanding competing perspectives, and writing clearly under pressure. Rather than just going through content, I try to get students thinking like political scientists asking why, not just what.

Techniques and methodology
I use a mix of direct explanation, Socratic questioning, and structured practice. For essay-based subjects like politics, I place a lot of emphasis on breaking down questions, planning answers, and working through feedback on draft paragraphs. For students preparing for exams, I use past papers heavily and focus on exam technique as much as subject knowledge.

Lesson length
I typically teach 60-120 minute sessions, dependent on the needs and availability of the student.

Qualifications and experience
I have a First Class degree in Spanish and Portuguese and a Distinction-level Masters, both from the University of Manchester. I'm currently completing a PhD in Politics at the University of York, where I have four years' experience teaching seminars, guest lecturing, and marking at undergraduate and postgraduate level. I won a Teaching Excellence Award in 2025 for my work. Alongside university teaching I have recent experience tutoring young people in alternative education settings, and I have worked with students with learning difficulties.

Who I teach
I'm well suited to GCSE and A-level Politics students, undergraduates needing essay support or dissertation guidance, and anyone studying Spanish at any level. I'm also happy to work with students on broader humanities and social science subjects (history, sociology, geography) particularly around essay writing and critical thinking skills.
