About Oliver
I hold a PhD in Political Theory from the University of Exeter, as well as a City and Guilds teaching qualification (Level 3). I worked in higher education as a tutor to BA and MA students for 4 years. I have also worked in further education institutions for 2 years, both as an associate lecturer and as a learning assistant, working with students with various accessibility requirements. Previous to that I have also worked as an EFL tutor.
I therefore have a great deal of experience with both teaching and assessment in UK higher education and elsewhere.
My expertise is in continental 'post-Kantian' philosophy and related political theory. I have a BA in English Literature and Philosophy from the University of East Anglia (2011), and an MA in Continental Philosophy from Essex University. The research I conducted for my PhD was focused on intellectual movements in early/mid 20th Century French philosophy, as seen through the early writings of Michel Foucault.
I have taught Political Theory and Philosophy at levels 4-7 since 2019 in UK higher education (i.e. Undergraduate and Master’s levels). I also taught briefly at level 3 (i.e. A level) at a further education college.
In particular, I have experience tutoring the following topics:
-Introductory philosophy
-History of philosophy
-Political theory/philosophy
-"big data"/AI ethics
My own research has been focused on continental (particularly French) philosophy, and I have tutored and mentored students who were also interested in related topics. Moreover, I have experience with informally mentoring international students whom (both those I have taught as well as fellow postgraduates) in navigating different cultural expectations within UK institutions.
Currently, I am preparing to help adult students (from 18+) through this platform. I am happy to work with undergraduates and postgraduates up to MA level. I am also open to those who are not currently in any formal programme, who simply wish to have access to the kind of expertise which is usually kept locked in the ivory towers!
PLEASE NOTE r.e. Academic Integrity:
The purpose of my lessons is to aid students in developing their own academic skills.
I do not offer to write or edit essays, coursework, dissertations, or any other assessed materials. All work produced and submitted for assessment by students must be their own.

I can offer tutoring and mentoring for those studying philosophy, politics, and related disciplines in a formal setting (i.e. university).
I am also open to more informal tutoring/classes for those who are not studying any courses in philosophy, but who simply wish to have access to subject expertise, without the rigmarole associated with a degree/qualification.
I am open to all over the age of 18.
For university students, sessions are designed to support students in gaining the skills required to approach and understand course material for themselves. I can also offer some guidance on academic writing. The overall goal is to cultivate self-trust in approaching difficult texts and ideas, and to learn self-sufficiency in putting together essays that will meet the requirements of university assessments.
A session with me will typically involve
- discussions or help with key concepts, theories, or readings
- strategies for approaching course materials
- guidance/feedback on essay structures and arguments
- advice on doing research for your essays/dissertations
We can discuss how you would like tutorials to be structured, depending on the kind of help you might want.
I am also aware that some may require certain adjustments to be made to facilitate additional needs - I am happy to discuss this with prospective students.
One-off sessions and longer-term support/tuition are available. We can discuss this during our initial communications/lesson.
Recommendations
Recommendations are written by the tutor's friends, family, and acquaintances.
I have been friends with Oliver for nearly 15 years, during which he has completed both a Masters and a PHD in philosophy; and I often tell people he is the most intelligent person I know.
Whilst some consider contrarians a bore, I feel privileged to have had my deeply held political, philosophical and ethical beliefs challenged by someone skilled enough to uncover the nuance of a topic I thought I knew inside out.
Without his friendship my life would be much more “unexamined”. Plus I was in a band with him for a bit, so I can vouch for the fact that he’ll show up on time and have done his homework.Oliver's calm and reassuring teaching methods have helped further my understanding of a subject I've struggled with historically. He tailored our discussions to my needs whilst ensuring what we talked about was relevant and appropriately challenging. The end results have left me with a skill set that allows me to continue my studies independently and confidently. I wholeheartedly recommend Oliver as a tutor.
