About Arefeh

Hello! I'm Arefeh Sherafati. Check out my website for my research portfolio: (concealed information)

I am a scientist passionate about discoveries at the intersection of physics, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence. I am also a research mentor and consultant and work with students and companies to explore cutting-edge questions in brain-inspired computation and data-driven neuroscience. I offer one-on-one and small-group research mentorship programs in computational neuroscience, AI, and data science. Learn More

In 2024, I completed my postdoctoral training at the University of California, San Francisco, where I led a project in collaboration with researchers at the Allen Institute for Brain Science. Together, we worked on open-sourcing the largest calcium imaging dataset to date from the mouse primary visual cortex.

Before that, I earned a Ph.D. in physics and completed two years of postdoctoral training at Washington University in St. Louis. My work focused on developing computational methods for a novel neurotechnology modality called high-density diffuse optical tomography (HD-DOT).

Prior to transitioning to computational neuroscience research, I obtained an M.S. in gravitational physics.

Research Mentorship: From Curiosity to Publication
Have you ever dreamed of contributing to real scientific knowledge, presenting at a conference, or even publishing your work before college? Whether you're a highly motivated high school student or an undergraduate with big ambitions, my research mentorship program is designed to guide you through every stage of building an original, publishable research project.

Over the course of 10 personalized, one-on-one sessions spread over 10 weeks, we’ll take your interests and turn them into a well-structured research project that could be submitted to science fairs, academic conferences, or even peer-reviewed journals.

Teaching Methodology
My mentorship style is deeply collaborative and tailored to your unique interests and background. I believe that students learn best by doing—so from our first session, you’ll be actively shaping your own project. You'll learn how to think like a scientist: asking bold questions, designing rigorous methods, analyzing real data, and communicating your findings clearly and convincingly.

Rather than teaching out of a textbook, I’ll show you how science is really done—introducing tools, concepts, and strategies that researchers use in top-tier labs and universities.

What to Expect in a Typical Lesson
Each session is structured to move you closer to a completed project, and no two projects (or students) are exactly the same. However, a typical outline might look like this:

Session 1–2: Define your research question, explore your interests, and perform background reading. We’ll identify what makes a good scientific question and begin forming your hypothesis.

Session 3–4: Design your methodology, including how you’ll collect or find data, and how to evaluate your results. I’ll introduce tools and platforms appropriate for your topic—whether that’s coding, lab work, or surveys.

Session 5–6: Data collection and initial analysis. You’ll begin implementing your project with my guidance, learning to troubleshoot and adapt like a true scientist.

Session 7–8: In-depth analysis and interpretation. You’ll draw conclusions, learn statistical reasoning, and understand how to frame your findings within the context of your field.

Session 9–10: Presentation and publication prep. We’ll refine your final report, work on science communication skills, and explore where to submit your project—whether it’s a science fair, conference, or student journal.

Throughout the mentorship, I provide feedback on your writing, help develop your presentation skills, and guide you through all the steps of scientific inquiry.

Why This Program Is Different
What sets this mentorship apart is its focus on real-world scientific practice. I’m not just a tutor—I’m a published researcher with experience mentoring students in competitive, high-impact settings. My goal is not only to help you complete a project but to equip you with the mindset and skills of a young scientist, capable of contributing to your field and standing out in college applications and beyond.

Whether you want to explore neuroscience, data science, psychology, or any other discipline, I’ll help you navigate the research landscape and emerge with a project you’re truly proud of.
