About Asia

I am a neuroscientist, interested in the mechanisms of memory, learning, motor learning, spatial cognition, perception, the relationship between motor and non-motor functions, language, and brain health in general.

I discovered the Baseworks method in Tokyo in 2015 and was amazed by both how the method made a lot of sense neurobiologically, and how, at the same time, certain applications left me completely dumbfounded as to how they could potentially affect the neuro-muscular system. After diligently practicing the method for some time, I became a certified teacher and worked closely with Baseworks founder and co-developer on mapping the method’s applications onto the known physiological/neurological/neuromuscular mechanisms.

Coming from an academic background, never having been exposed to or interested in sports/fitness, and having been really disembodied, I cannot overemphasize how much the Baseworks method transformed me physically and perceptually.

I am deeply committed to share the Baseworks Method, which, in my opinion, completely redefines “physical education”.

As an extension of the Cognitive intelligence (IQ) vs Emotional intelligence (EQ) framework, the method I am trained in differentiates the so-called Physical intelligence (PQ) (a concept different from Gardner's Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence).

Physical intelligence is the ability to intuitively understand the body (one’s own and the bodies of other people) – read the sensory signals, know how to engage the muscles, intuitively understand the biomechanics, effortlessly maintain good posture and learn new movement skills.

A person with low PQ may be described as uncoordinated, or “disembodied”, or having a “low body awareness”, often does not feel 100% comfortable and satisfied with their body, and struggles in popular exercise/movement classes (which often demotivates the person from continuing).

The method I am using (Baseworks method) is based on making the person aware of the physical, psychological, sensory, and cognitive limitations, unique to each individual, and guiding them through a step-by-step process of working around these limitations. The method works through interrupting unconscious motor programs, redefining the movement task goals. Basically, it makes you aware of what your brain unconsciously tells your muscles to do.

The lessons I offer may have a different focus depending on your background and needs.

For beginners

You will be able to:

Develop strength, flexibility and mobility
Learn to control the muscles based on the understanding of neuro-muscular mechanisms that facilitate comfortable painless stretching that leads to quicker gains in flexibility
Develop balance and dexterity
Develop sensory awareness – being able to sense the body in a higher resolution
Learn to understand your personal condition and limitations
Learn to better understand how to use your body so that it will be easier to learn any movement skill
Will gain intuitive understanding of the imbalances in your body, that will help to improve your posture, gait, running, relieve some chronic pain.
Gain a better understanding of when to push and when to rest – an invaluable skill to read your stress/fatigue level, that tremendously improves quality of life and productivity.
Improve attention, visuo-spatial reasoning, concentration
Increase self-esteem
Improve emotional regulation, sleep
and more.

(See the video of our students talking about their experience at the bottom of the description)

For movement professionals

If you are an athlete/dancer/martial artist/experienced yoga practitioner/etc, or you are teaching any movement modality, you could:

Make a use of a holistic conditioning movement practice that addresses the entire body
Improve explicit understanding of the body (movement professionals may be skilled in movement without explicit awareness)
Address types of training that you are missing in your native discipline
Pick up some tips that you could use in your own teaching practice

For doctors/physiotherapists/healthcare practitioners

You could learn a new approach to empower your clients to approach exercise, regain mobility, become healthier physically and psychologically.

The sessions could be one-on-one or in small groups (generally, no more than 6 people).

The sessions are open to anyone at any level of fitness, including the aging population and those with chronic injuries/recovering from an acute injury. The only prerequisite is the ability to understand and follow the instructions (so the method will not be suitable for individuals with severely impaired cognition/working memory)
