About Karin

I obtained my BSc (2016) and MSc (2018) at the University of Toronto where I specialized in biochemistry, nutritional science and medical biophysics. I have taught a dozen workshops aimed at undergraduate and graduate students and have worked one-on-one with students from all academic backgrounds. Many concepts in biology often seem quite abstract but I believe through genuine curiosity, we can break them down into more digestible ideas. I think biology is truly beautiful and I would love to share my passion with you.

My teaching style:
- I want you to get as much out of your material as possible. Let's ask bigger questions and help you really understand the topic at hand.

A typical lesson plan:
- What did you cover in class this week? what are the topics that seem most abstract and hard to understand? we will break it down!

What sets me apart?
- I wish for you to succeed not only in the course you are taking but long-term. Let's chat about what you are interested in pursuing beyond the semester. I can help you work on application materials for Msc and PhD programs and find unique ways to make you stand out as a candidate.

Who are my lessons for?
- Anyone looking to dive deep into the mysterious world of science!

  • When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

My interest in biology and genetics began in high school, where I was first introduced to these subjects by some fantastic teachers. This experience sparked my curiosity and led me to pursue a deeper understanding of the subject during my university studies. I went on to earn a Master's degree in medical biophysics, with a focus on cancer genetics. During my studies, I had the opportunity to delve into the genetic and molecular basis of one of the most challenging diseases facing humanity, and this experience was incredibly inspiring to me. I am driven by a desire to find new and innovative solutions to diseases such as cancer and neurodegeneration!
  • What makes you passionate about your subject?

As someone with a background in biology, with a focus on cancer genetics, I am drawn to the challenge of understanding complex biological systems and finding solutions to real-world problems. The subject matter is ever-evolving, and there is always something new to learn, which keeps me engaged and motivated. I am particularly drawn to the potential for my research and expertise to make a positive impact on people's lives. The satisfaction that comes from knowing that my work has the potential to help others is what fuels my passion for this field. I am excited to continue learning, exploring and contributing to advancements in my subject area.
  • What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

I really enjoy tutoring because it gives me the opportunity to share my knowledge and passion for my subject with others. Seeing students grasp new concepts and develop their skills is incredibly rewarding, and it makes all the hard work and preparation worth it. What makes me a "Superprof" is my ability to break down complex concepts into simple, easy-to-understand terms, and to tailor my approach to meet the unique needs and learning styles of each student. I have a deep understanding of my subject and years of experience working with students at different skill levels, so I can help students achieve their goals and reach their full potential. You can expect a patient, friendly, and eager tutor that aims to help students succeed.
  • Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.

Yes, I have a role model who was one of my supervisors during my undergraduate research studies. She is a psychiatrist who focuses on schizophrenia research. What was inspiring about her was her combination of extreme motivation, kindness, and passion for helping her patients. Despite the demanding nature of her work, she always approached her patients with care and empathy. She showed me that it is possible to be both rigorous in one's research and compassionate in one's interactions with patients. Her dedication to her work and her patients made a lasting impression on me, and she remains a source of inspiration to this day.
  • What are your keys to success?

    1. Deep subject knowledge: I have a strong understanding of the science subjects I tutor, and this allows me to provide clear explanations and to answer students' questions with confidence.
    2. Adaptive teaching style: I understand that each student has their own unique learning style, and I work to adapt my teaching style to meet the individual needs of each student.
    3. Engaging and interactive sessions: I believe that students learn best when they are actively engaged and participating in the learning process. I aim to make my tutoring sessions interactive and enjoyable.
    4. Clear and concise explanations: I try to break down complex science concepts into simple and easy-to-understand terms, so that students can grasp the material and feel confident in their understanding.
    5. Patience and encouragement: I understand that learning can be challenging at times, and I work to provide a supportive and encouraging environment for my students. I believe that with patience and guidance, every student has the potential to succeed in science.
