About Ailill
I am an Irish PhD researcher currently based between Dublin, Glasgow, and Oxford. I graduated from both Trinity College Dublin and the University of Oxford, where I was respectively awarded the Foundation Scholarship and Clarendon Scholarship. I have an outstanding academic record and consistent success in applying to some of the world's most selective academic programs.
I have been tutoring since 2021, both online and in person. I have extensive experience building students' critical thinking, sharp verbal reasoning, and academic confidence. I work with people across many ages and learning goals, from young children to undergraduates studying Humanities and Social Science subjects. I take pride in my ability to explain complex ideas simply and provide students with truly effective feedback.
My Teaching Experience:
Instructor at the Centre for Talented Youth Ireland - Taught Sociology and Criminology to young adults scoring in the top 5th percentile of verbal reasoning nationally;
Application Advisor - Guided a pool of younger students in their applications to both undergraduate and graduate programs. My students have been accepted to some of the world's most competitive institutions, including Harvard Law School, Columbia University, and the University of Oxford;
Debate Coach & Judge - Spent three years with the European Youth Parliament mentoring participants in public speaking, argument structure, and competitive debate;
1,000+ Hours of English Language Instruction - Trained diverse learners, from young students to business executives, in academic and professional English since earning my TEFL certification in 2020.
My Academic Background:
Trinity College Dublin - PhD Researcher in Irish History;
University of Oxford - MSt in History & Critical Theory (Clarendon Scholar, awarded to top 0.01% of applicants);
Trinity College Dublin - First-Class Honors B.A. in History & Political Science (Foundation Scholar, awarded to top 1% of university cohort).

By helping students to revise their work with a critical eye, I enable them to identify the strengths and weaknesses of any academic text. My teaching is based in a framework of student-led learning, in which students do not merely reproduce the appearance of advanced writing, but come to understand WHY certain writing is advanced and how they can achieve a similar quality across all academic assignments.
I take a holistic approach that develops key skills for exam performance, essay assignments, seminar discussions, and Oxbridge interviews. My approach is not only academically productive but encourages the learner to develop independent confidence. First and foremost, I believe in a communication style that is clear but gentle. I make it a priority that students feel affirmed, challenged, and respected. This is all the more important because tutoring adolescents and young people can have an outsized impact on their senses of self and the goals to which they aspire.
My six years of teaching has allowed me to work with a range of ages and abilities, from young children to senior business professionals and students who present signs of ASD, ADHD, and SEMH. I have also worked with people of many nationalities and am sensitive to both cultural contexts and different academic requirements.
Please note that I am DBS certified (UK) and can provide proof upon request.

I know Ailill through a mutual friend. He was two years above me at Trinity and gave me several months’ lessons in essay structure and research. It’s improved my grade average from 2:1 to 1:1.
