My PhD in Philosophy of Education underpins how I teach: I help students think logically because critical reasoning underpins learning in so many subjects. Be curious! Think big! Love the detail!

About Hugo
The teacher's job is to understand how a learner's mind works, what engages their thinking, and to find ways to connect that with what exams are looking for. I can help you succeed.
It takes empathy, imagination and a rigorous eye for detail - that is why I did a PhD in Philosophy of Education! I help my students build their thinking skills because logical reasoning lies at the heart of so many subjects in maths and the sciences as well as in the arts and humanities.
I have taught in Primary and Secondary Schools in my career, in both the state and private sector, and I have also taught at graduate and post-graduate levels. I know how to adapt my approach to each student's needs.
I've been a Head of Department, an examiner, I've published some of my work and I'm a big reader - I know that students who spend time reading are more at home with language and are more fluent in their self-expression. So expect reading recommendations!

- Confidence is key for so many students. - I specialise in helping individuals understand their own strengths, and then we work together to connect these with exam success criteria. - Critical thinking should be fun, rewarding and sometimes profound. - Lessons last one hour, with appropriate changes of pace incorporated to make maximum use of the time. - I have twenty years teaching experience and a number of degrees: a PhD, King's College London, Philosophy of Education. MSc Oxford University in Visual Anthropology. MA in British Studies, Humboldt University, Berlin. PGCE (QTS) in Religious Education from the Institute of Education, London, and a 2:1 MA (Hons) in Religious Studies, Edinburgh University.
I use a lot of questioning in my lessons to help students show me how they think, and I expect participation!
Recommendations
Recommendations are written by the tutor's friends, family, and acquaintances.
Hugo worked with our son to prepare him for his GCSE RS exam.
He is always engaging and enthusiastic – it was a pleasure to listen in on their lessons.
I could tell you how tutoring from Hugo helped boost his grade from a level 3 in his mocks to achieving a Level 8 in the actual exam, but this would only tell you a part of the story. Hugo did much more – he enthused our son for the subject, encouraged him to think more deeply as he responded to questions and to consider the real world implications of abstract subject content.
I would unreservedly commend Hugo as a tutor.
