About Preston

Iโ€™m Dr. Preston, a physicist, nuclear engineer, and educator with over a decade of experience helping students achieve goals they once thought were beyond reach.

My academic journey began at UC Berkeley and the Lawrence Berkeley and Livermore National Laboratories, where I earned my Bachelorโ€™s degree in Physics, and continued through graduate school, where I earned both my M.S. (2022) and Ph.D. (2025) in Nuclear Engineering. My professional work has taken me across government, academia, and advanced technical environments where physics is not just studied, it is actively applied to solve real-world scientific and engineering problems.

Teaching has been a major part of my life for more than 10 years. During that time, I have worked with students across a wide range of ages, backgrounds, and experience levels: from learners encountering physics for the first time to advanced university students tackling challenging coursework. I have taught everything from algebra and introductory science to AP Physics, university-level mechanics, electricity and magnetism, and advanced quantitative problem-solving.

What makes me different as a tutor is the combination of deep technical expertise and the ability to explain difficult concepts clearly, patiently, and without intimidation. Physics can feel overwhelming when concepts seem abstract or mathematically dense, but I specialize in making complex ideas understandable, logical, and even enjoyable.

Students often work with me not just to improve grades or prepare for exams, but to build true confidence in problem-solving and scientific thinking. Whether you are aiming for AP success, trying to survive a difficult college course, strengthening engineering fundamentals, or simply wanting a better understanding of how the physical world works, I would be excited to help you succeed.

My physics lessons are highly personalized, structured, and focused on building genuine understanding, not just memorizing formulas. Physics can feel intimidating because it combines mathematics, conceptual reasoning, and problem-solving under pressure, but my teaching approach is designed to make even difficult topics clear, intuitive, and manageable.

I begin by identifying your current level, strengths, learning style, and academic goals, then create a customized learning pathway tailored specifically to your needs. Whether you are trying to improve classroom performance, prepare for AP Physics exams, succeed in a university course, strengthen engineering fundamentals, or build confidence from the ground up, each lesson is designed for measurable progress.

A typical lesson may include concept breakdowns, visual problem-solving walkthroughs, guided derivations, worked examples, targeted practice problems, exam preparation strategies, and real-world applications that connect abstract physics principles to meaningful scenarios. When helpful, I incorporate adaptive learning tools and structured progress tracking to continuously refine lesson pacing, difficulty, and focus based on performance.

Topics may include classical mechanics, kinematics, Newtonian dynamics, work and energy, momentum, rotational motion, gravitation, oscillations, waves, thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, circuits, optics, modern physics, AP Physics 1/2/C, and university-level physics coursework.

What sets my lessons apart is the balance between conceptual mastery and problem-solving execution. Many students struggle because they memorize equations without understanding the underlying physical intuition. My goal is to help you think like a physicist: breaking complex problems into solvable parts, recognizing patterns, and developing confidence in your analytical reasoning.

My lessons are ideal for high school students, AP Physics learners, university students, engineering majors, exam-focused learners, and anyone seeking a deeper understanding of physics through clear, practical, and personalized instruction.
